SE/30 and System 7

SE/30 and System 7 Troubleshooting 3 posts May 7, 2011 — May 8, 2011
Hi all,

Trying to get my SE/30 up and running something useful. However, I cannot get it to boot System 7, any variety. It will not boot off the HD SC 20 anymore, it used to boot off the blessed Sys 7 install that was on there, not anymore. It will boot from a System 7.0.1 and 7.1 Disk Tools floppy, but then freeze when the Welcome to Macintosh screen disappears, right when Finder should come up. This is a generic Disk Tools that will boot many of my other Macs. Not sure what's going on with it, any suggestions? What System Enabler does the SE/30 need, anyone know offhand?

I'll look into more Google tomorrow, but its late and just wondered if anyone has any suggestions off the top of their head. :beige:

As far as I know, the SE/30 should boot fine with systems up to 7.5.5, no enablers needed -- assuming you have enough RAM, or course.

Can you check in another Mac whether the System Folder on your HD SC 20 is still blessed? I think some Macs which can't run 6.0.x (e.g. Quadra 700) are indeed able to install 6.0.8 on an external disk.

Does it boot successfully into 6.0.x? Maybe you're facing a SCSI problem and/or your floppy disk is misaligned.

Hope this helps, please let us know of your results for further directions.

Possible RAM issues. Also, replace all SMT motherboard capacitors, as cap rot can cause all sorts of weirdness.
