Yeah, they certainly did make Comm Slot ethernet cards, as long as its Comm Slot 1 (NOT Comm Slot 2! these are designed for PCI based systems) it'll work.
As for OS, how much RAM has it got? Basically, I like to use this as a guide:
4MB: System 7.1
8MB: System 7.5.x
16MB: System 7.6.1
24MB+: OS 8.1
As for software....depends on what you want to do with it really.
AppleWorks 5 runs well, I'd imagine Office 4.2 should be ok on it, as well as just about any game that'll run on a 68k. iCab runs ok, if you want a web browser...it all depends on what you want to do with it.
