I've seen that plenty in newer boards where the MAC is in flash memory, but not in an old board. (They're usually in EEPROMs on old boards, not in true hard ROM.)

(Heck, I still have a stash of 10 unused MAC addresses sitting around in a text file somewhere, and an network chip reprogramming utility......)
