Powerbook G3 Lombard 10.4 Wireless card

My Orinoco Gold (flashed silver) card doesn't work in 10.4 but it does work in OS 9. Are there any cheap cards that will work in 10.4? I don't want to buy the wrong one and it would be of help if someone already has this setup.

I have a Motorola GN825G wireless adapter that worked for a while. When it works, it works great. The bad thing is that after a while, the card powers itself off and from then on, the system refuses to see it. I've seen this behavior with the system booted 10.3 and 10.4. I finally bought a USB wireless dongle that works only with 10.4 and I seem to be pretty happy with it on this Lombard.

I have a feeling my issue is a problem with the motherboard. This machine also refuses to recognize the battery. I've changed everything except the motherboard troubleshooting the battery issue. I refuse to buy a motherboard for a 13 year old machine hoping it will fix the problem. For what I use this machine for, I'll live with it's problems.

On my Lombard that is running 10.4, the Motorola WN825Gv2 card works well. These are available for around $8-10 on the 'bay. My memory is that Tiger recognizes it as an Airport card with no additional drivers.

(With my other Lombard that is running 10.3, I can get the Orinoco card to work at the office, but not at home. Weird. It seems to be incompatible with the specific DSL modem, because I've changed all other parameters. Oh well.)

I can't remember the model I had, but it was a Belkin card. It worked with the 10.4 Airport drivers because it had the same chipset in it as the airport cards do.

I used to use a Linksys WPC54G v3 with the built-in airport drivers. (but you might have to run software update a couple times to get the latest, I had to do that in both 10.3 and 10.4 on my PDQ)

I know for a fact the Belkin F5D7011 ver.1000 does work. I use one in my Pismo for WPA/WPA2 access

The Airport card is using a BCM 43 xx Chipset and all the following cards are known to work with the Airport soft :

Hi,

The Lombard isn't supported per se, but 10.4 will run. One can bypass the checks in the installer by using X Post Facto or installing onto a supported machine's drive and transplanting that drive into the Lombard.

And man, the Lombards are so much better under 10.4 for normal tasks. Max out the RAM and transplant a drive from a Pismo - you'll like it!

Hey, at my new workplace I've been unable to hook to a WPA2 guest network with the original Airport card. I ordered an Airport Extreme PCMCIA card today. That should solve the problem, right?

The guest network at my other office location is an open network with a simple access agreement and the original Airport card handles that just fine, of course.

I have a TrendNet-based card in mine, but I haven't used it in a while. The chipset on it is a Realtek RTL8185. While 10.4 doesn't support it out of the box Realtek has drivers for it on its web site.

Once those are installed it works quite well.

Apple’s original AirPort card appears to be physically incapable of WPA/WPA2 encryption. The software doesn’t tell you, of course — it just silently fails to work.

Where did you find an AirPort Extreme PC Card? Apple AE cards are a different, larger size, and I seem to recall that even the PC Card shaped original AirPort cards wouldn’t work in a normal PC Card bay, only in a dedicated slot.

My 800MHz DVI TiBook seems to have a bad AirPort card slot — every card I’ve tried in it died within a month, so I’m very very interested in this thread.

WPA will work on the original AirPort Card. You need to be running 10.3.9 Panther and the AirPort 3.3.1 software update (AirPort 3.3.1 is not a combo updater, 3.3 is. You need to upgrade to AirPort 3.3 then install 3.3.1).

When you are in 10.4.11, the Motorola wn825g pc cards work fine with the wpa2 encryption. Am using those now for both home and work networks.

Once those are installed it works quite well.

The model is TEW-421PC. Hardware revision is C1.0R. In the original post it worked on my home and work wireless networks. At my new job it connects but does not get an IP address. The work wireless is using WPA2-TKIP. Didn't know if it was related to the card or the OS.
