Is it possible to connect the subject's hard drive on Powerbook 540c?

No the Powerbook 500 series only work with SCSI drives.

If you're lucky to have bought a PB540c new with a 750MB or 1GB "SCSI" drive, it's a 2.5" IDE hard disk with a SCSI adapter. You can plug in any 2.5" IDE drive < 6GB in there quite happily. The adapter seems to have problems with bigger drives and later ATA standards. The only other option is an ARTMix 2.5" adapter
