Originally when I set out to find and acquire the Quadra 700,
Here was my vague reasoning, please don't cringe.
- I saw it on jurassic park, it looked like a bad ass machine.
- I like how it's a Tower with one simple disk slot in the front.
- The Design language is awesome looking
- It was the first Quadra to include an AAUI Networking port.
After i received my Quadra 700,
Here are some more things i noticed/appreciated about it.
- The Program and Reset buttons on the front have a perfect feel when you press them
- Case is easy to open
- Its fast
- Using It, Truly feels like a bad ass professional grade machine,
- This thing always is reminding me of it's quality, Well built machine, must have received lot's of love from engineering.

I made elevator shoe feets for all three of mine so they can be run while sitting on top of carpet without burning up!

It's unlikely that anyone old enough to have bought a Quadra 700 new would ever think anything thing like that about any computer. We'd seen way too many changes in computing over such a short period of time by then to have had that kind of expectation. We'd already bought enough computers that didn't live up to the hoopla built up around new releases to be "waiting" for a rollout unless we were using something that was badly outdated and ready to upgrade.
Old time users I've known seem to be a breed apart, we don't actually expect computers to work, so we're happy when they do. Models weren't usually around long enough to become totally enamored with any particular one. Just in the history of the Mac, we saw four generations of processor architecture and more OS revisions in those first seven years than OSX has had in, what is it, 13 years now since its first release?
I'd like to hear what some of the older comrades have to say about my observations, I was between 30 and 40 when the Quadra 700 was released. How do you folks think about this subject and my take on it?

i gave them a bath in the tub, used some comet cleanser and a scrubby.
there is a-lot of subtle differences between the Q700 and IIci.
- The the case and how the mainboard is held in is completely different

- The only thing that seems to be the same is the design / mounting of the PSU and the HD/Floppy Tray
- Even the Brand of the PSU is different, AZTEC in the Q700, DELTA in the IIci
- Also the Q700 has AAUI and MIC in - IIci doesnt

The speaker and how the speaker Mounts/holds motherboard is the same. Q700/IIci - last similarity I could think of.
IIci's a nice carriage horse, the Q700 is an Arabian.
I had one 700 originally and then I got a second. They started (in)breeding shortly after and now I have four.
The 700 is just so cute, and begs the question, why 900?, why?

Yep, the slots. The fact that the 900/950 had sixteen SIMM sockets was just mind blowing in its day. Of course, 72 pin SIMM sockets were not far in the future at that point, putting the same capacity in two or four SIMM sockets ultimately.
One of these days, I'm going to see if I can get the Q650 logic board in the Q700 case. I adore the IIcx/IIci/Q700 case design, but the Q650 has several advantages over the Q700.

A Quadra 650 MoBo should be exactly the same form factor as the 7100's. There's a 7100 MoBo in Shelob's gullet, everything lines up perfectly, reset switches, LED light tube, speaker carrier/MoBo retainer and two of the Slots. She ate the @$$ end off the 7100 too, so she's got all the NuBus Slots clear as well as the PDS VidCard's backplane.
If you're not worried about the third NuBus Slot, the 6500 ought to be plug and play.
But if you stick something without any need for the backplane plate or access, like a STORM DSP Card, into the inboard slot that's not even a worry. You should be good to go for a totally stealth upgrade with all slots in use.
Tell me what's better about the 650 MoBo besides the speed bump and the extra NuBus Slot? :?:

I used a Q700 when it was brand new in high school, I was working on the yearbook, and we got two of 'em (plus one Q950) for yearbook use only!
Later got one of my own right after I left college, followed by "collecting" two more. One is fully decked out (max RAM, nice fast/large SCSI hard drive, fast accelerated video card, etc,) and in good physical shape, the other two are in various states of disrepair (one had its power supply yanked to put into a failing IIci.)
In 2002-2003, I configured one as a internet machine for a friend. Worked just fine with iCab until she got a modern computer of her own. Sadly, they've all been sitting unused in storage for a few years now.
Later got one of my own right after I left college, followed by "collecting" two more. One is fully decked out (max RAM, nice fast/large SCSI hard drive, fast accelerated video card, etc,) and in good physical shape, the other two are in various states of disrepair (one had its power supply yanked to put into a failing IIci.)

Yes, I believe that the case for the IIvi/IIvx, the C/Q650 and the PM7100 were all the same or essentially the same. But while that case has the spot for the optical drive, there's still something about the IIcx/IIci/Q700 case that I like better.
Twice the memory capacity. And I have all the 72 pin 32MB SIMMs on hand that I could ever use and very few 30 pin 16MB SIMMs. Hence the perpetual $3 32MB SIMM sale.
I'm not sure how the on-board video compares. I looked at all this stuff when I came up with the idea more than five years ago, but other than acquiring a Q650 logic board and a few Q700s, I haven't done anything with the idea.
I figured it would be the memory, but I didn't feel like doing the research . . .
. . . and it's a lot more fun to hash this stuff out in the open.
I'm guessing the Video is a lot better for that entire desktop series, as 16" & 17" monitors were becoming standard fare by then. The Mac II series was never really intended to support a medium size monitor beyond the Portrait. You needed to buy a monitor support for anything that wasn't large enough to stand on its own tilt/swivel base with tiny little rubber feets.

] ]'>The djMEMC memory controller contains a DAFB variant. Which means the Q700, 900, 950, C/Q 610, 650, 800, 605, and Performa/LC variants thereof have basically the same video controller.
this sync on green thing the quadra 700 does is slightly annoying,
it may just be the adaptor i am using db15 to vga, but the only mode that works with out messing up the colors is VGA mode, but that stops at 800x600
the q605, the colors come in just fine at higher resolutions.

Nice link Bunsen. I did not know that the Q650/800 did memory interleaving. It sounds a bit like a pre-cursor of the PCI PowerMacs. We should hunt down Dale Adams and interrogate him.

In my tests, a 128 MB SIMM was seen as 64MB -- probably two banks of 32MB, given that a 64MB SIMM is seen as 32MB. Rob, do you have any insight on this? I know you've been experimenting in this area a bit.

I've been having a heck of a time getting my hands on a 650 or 800. After several purchases that never materialized, I have paid for one that in theory was shipped 6 days ago. Only time will tell if it has actually shipped, and if it will ever arrive.

One additional NuBus slot trumps that advantage very nicely.

Yep, Your Toaster ROM SIMM is a 32bit clean ROM, so you don't have the Mode32 extension in the System Folder.
Next time you set up a Custom System/ROM SIMM file to burn, be sure to use the "Install for any Macintosh" option for the OS install and then install Mode32 for any Dirty ROM Macs in which you might want to try it. Then use that System Folder for your ROM SIMM burn. Get the M32 installer on floppy and you might be OK as is . . .

The IIcx is bone stock, Dougg3's rom simm doesn't work in the IIcx,

Nope, the high system RAM usage and 8MB available is the standard "needs Mode32 installed" error message. Just do it!
Alrighty… pretty sure its already there, the same zip boot disk works fine with the SE/30. i'll get out my floppy disks and and do a Special IIcx install, just for it because its just so darn special.
Rob told me a little about the Q650 memory expansion in PM. The image shown there is probably with a large RAM disk. Above some value, he must allocate the extra memory to a RAM disk or it causes system problems. Still, he's got the available memory way beyond the original spec. or had when he PM'd me.
Yeah, it's a work in progress, but a half gig in a 68k mac ain't bad. A larger RAM disk than stock HDD, and more available memory than the stock ROM allows isn't terrible.

- Nubus Expansion
- All Solid Caps
- User Friendly Case, easy access.
- Quality, Non Brittle plastics
A negative:
- no internal optical drive expansion - 5 1/4
I would like to say Quadra 700 is my most favorite Quadra.
IF the q605 did not have brittle plastic, that would be my #1.

Over a 20 year period, I was called in to sort out Macs for Alec Jeffreys, the inventor of genetic fingerprinting. When we first met, Alec was using a Quadra 700 which needed to be hooked up to university file servers plus a few patches to get MS Basic(!) working again. The Quadra was overkill for his immediate requirements but served him well when we rolled out Mosaic 2.0 (quickly followed by Netscape 0.9 etc) as a supported service for Mac users. The Quadra 700 replaced an SE/30 IIRC which continued to be used by other members of the lab.
Alec Jeffreys was one of those people who used his Mac for as long as it worked. The lab needed lots of other kit and whilst the department was well funded, Alec chose not to purchase vanity computers for himself. Attempts were made to drag him away from his G4 long after Apple had ceased providing OS support but he clung on.
I have a 700 and am looking for a good use or two for it! I'm considering taking it to my new apartment once I move in to serve as an Ethernet/AppleTalk bridge. The IBM 15" LCD I picked up in Charlotte at a thrift shop would be a nice topper for it.
For me, the biggest appreciation I have for it is the fact it shipped with tantalum caps on board. Some of these computers are reaching 22 years of age and still have original, functional caps (and will for another 30 years or so).

Also got my 700 relived, what RAM can I use for the 4 slots to upgrade, currently I have 4x 4MB. Can I mix? f.e. 2x 8MB + 2x 4MB?
And what is the single slot in the middle of the board for?

Speed:
Yes 700 = 25 MHz, 650 = 33 MHz, but it's maybe 30-40% faster (just a feeling), OS is/are the same 7.5.3/7.5.5 don't remember now exactly. The OS on the 700 is also quite new, the 650 is loaded with some stuff, did way more with it than the 700. It's my 3rd use of 700, yet ever.
The HD indeed is only 160 MB in the 650 resides a 300++ maybe 500 but <1 GB. Does it make THAT difference? Would be
Got a spare 500 MB ProDrive Apple OEM here. But this drive every half or minute makes a rattling sound, is this normal for this drives?

So cannot mix, ok. But could I use same size modules of other size than 4 MB? I.e. f.e. 8 MB modules? 3x 8 MB = 24 MB or 4x 8 MB = 32 MB and so on...

OC I have to dig around the forum a bit, I guess? Read about OC'ing some other Mac (was it 605?) by only changing resistors/soldered jumpers? Would be nice if same easy way to do on 700. Don't have an idea how hot it gets if OC'in by 133% 25 MHz -> 33 MHz. Now the heatsink without fan is estimated 35°C "cold" after 1h of usage.
Modern 10k I think is overkill 50 pin SCSI maxes out at 10 MB/s. Access time would be way faster and storage space much more of course. 10k drives often are loud. Didn't find a silent one yet.

Yes 700 = 25 MHz, 650 = 33 MHz, but it's maybe 30-40% faster (just a feeling), OS is/are the same 7.5.3/7.5.5 don't remember now exactly. The OS on the 700 is also quite new, the 650 is loaded with some stuff, did way more with it than the 700. It's my 3rd use of 700, yet ever.
The HD indeed is only 160 MB in the 650 resides a 300++ maybe 500 but <1 GB. Does it make THAT difference? Would be

OC I have to dig around the forum a bit, I guess? Read about OC'ing some other Mac (was it 605?) by only changing resistors/soldered jumpers? Would be nice if same easy way to do on 700. Don't have an idea how hot it gets if OC'in by 133% 25 MHz -> 33 MHz. Now the heatsink without fan is estimated 35°C "cold" after 1h of usage.

I also think the 650 has the better architecture (RAM access and bus speeds) than 700 even with same clock speed. IMHOThere's a definite generation gap going on. The best way to speed up a Q700 is actually doing a 650 MoBo transplant . . . [}

Personally, I feel the performance differences between 68k macs are lost in the rounding error of 25 years of computing advances.
However, from a technical perspective, the 650 is going to have significantly better memory bandwidth, particularly with interleaving. The maximum RAM is much higher, and RAM for it is significantly cheaper. Add to it the fact that you can put the modified ROM in a 650/800 and get 520MB of maximum RAM, letting you have both a larger RAM disk than HDDs of the era with more RAM left over for application use than a q700 or stock 650/800, and I think I've found my favorite quadra.
There are of course other aspects to consider, such as form factor. I'm a fan of the 700's case, particularly over the cases of the 650 or 800. The onboard video of the 700 is capable of 24bit video where the 650/800 is only 16bit. The 650's SONIC ethernet controller is a bus master on the system bus, resulting in much lower CPU load for similar throughput. But for many practical uses, it's kind of hard to beat a several hundred megabyte RAM disk that is preserved across warm restarts, with hundreds of megs of RAM left over.

Q700, Greenish Tint Video. With adaptor set to VGA mode..
If your Pram battery is dead, Replace it, and if you are booting into a OS, 7.6 or higher, it will fix your greenish tint issue.
My issue was, i had 7.1 installed. and the pram battery was dead.
So i changed the PRAM battery. Booted to 8.1 from external zip disk. POP in the middle of the boot process it corrected the screen, (green tint issue). Rebooted and 7.1 now looks fine…
I think the Quadra 610 has this same green tint issue and Fix as well.

Add the Quadra 650 to that too. When I was testing my board, hooked to a VGA monitor via adapter, I was getting the green tint but it fixed itself while booting from a 7.6 disc.
great i am glad my post helped you! Hmm, the one and only Quadra 700 I had was DOA so I tossed it... maybe I shouldn't have done that in hindsight. I wanted a faster A/UX machine than my IIci (also since tossed), so much for that ever happening.

One of my Frankenmacs is a Q700 motherboard in a IIvx case with a PPC 601 upgrade board. It was originally going to go into a IIci case but then I acquired the IIvx and liked the sturdy metal case that was capable of supporting a monitor on top better than the IIci case.

how fast did you clock it up to?
If I recall correctly it went from stock 25 MHz to 30MHz with no stability problems but much beyond that and things got flakey.
Wish I still had my Q700. I think I sold it on eBay or gave it away, who knows now. Maybe someone here got it! Anyone receive a Q700 in 2002-2003ish that was spray painted gloss black??? :lol:
