Macintosh LC ii Chimes of Death

Macintosh LC ii Chimes of Death Hardware 5 posts Sep 13, 2015 — Aug 10, 2016
Hello there!  Someone recently asked me a question about how to fix the HDD's so it got me in the mood to take out my Macs....Its been a while since I used them but less than a year ago. Upon testing them so far they all work but one Macintosh LC ii gives me the chimes of death right away when starting it up. It worked fine last time I used it, they are always stored in a temperature controlled room and all caps have been replaced on all my machines. I took out the memory, video memory, and everything else but the PSU to see, one at a time, and still always gave chimes of death. Any ideas where to start to look for potential issues?

Any help is appreciated. Thank you for your assistance. :)

I'd look for battery damage on the board. Quite possible for the battery to have leaked and damaged traces on the board.

I've seen your cap jobs and they scare me. Also make sure to wash the boards after a de cap if the cap goo sits on the pcb even after a recap , will cause massively accerlatored rot and via/trace/pad even i/c damage.

The machine used to work when I stored it and I do not leave batteries in any of my machines so its not a leaked battery. Could be some residual goo from the caps perhaps, but as mentioned before it was working when stored. As for the cap job, thanx a lot Uni lol. :p But I'm no where near a professional, I just do this for fun cuz I like to tinker and luv vintage electronics. Plus the way I look at it is I saved these macs from a trash pile as they all needed caps. That's why I am wondering what causes the chimes of death first thing... What do these macs check when doing the post test when first turned on. I know memory is checked after the Bong. Maybe I should put this one through a dish washer too...has any one ever done that before? If so what do I need to know? No drying I suppose and no detergent?
