Not enough power with just the 9 volt battery, the small wires were only meant to retain clock while changing out battery. If you use a PowerBook series power plug 7.2 volt 2amp cord it should work. I use mine like tat now while waiting for the new cyclone batteries to recall a pack. The cord that comes with the portable is only meant as a charger not a power supply. They changed that with the first PowerBooks is why you can use it. After recalling of course with battery in use original plug for correct charging.
