I don't cover Samba because I haven't needed it yet. I'm personally unaware of any compatible clients or software suites to enable it. You could settle for a bridge machine, in that case.
OT 1.3 allows you to connect up to Tiger. If you don't have any machines running Tiger, then it won't be necessary. The standard install of 7.5.3 should connect fine up to 10.2.8 -- I've heard of some issues with 10.3 but can't confirm any because I don't have and never had Panther. A bridge machine running Jaguar would make for a great bridge machine, accessible under System 6 and has Samba. Ideally it would also boot OS 9 natively...
