Internal SCSI Extension cable?

Internal SCSI Extension cable? Troubleshooting 7 posts Mar 18, 2013 — Mar 19, 2013
I am doing a bit of modification to the inside of my Color Classic trying to fit a SSD solution. I need a move things around a little and I need a cable that can extend a 50 pin internal SCSI ribbon cable.

Any ideas?

Hi,

I don't know about extending the existing cable, but it might just be simpler to get a longer one instead.

There were some PCs and Mac clones which used multi-device cables, and those are pretty long in some machines.

You could also get one out of a Quadra 900/950, or perhaps a Mac II.

I hope this helps. I don't really have any other ideas, unfortunately.

Hopefully someone else will chime in.

It's not as easy as just getting a longer one, because the SCSI ribbon is part of the custom slide-in rail system of the CC/5xx series.

When I needed another SCSI connector on my CC-Zip I stripped the stock SCSI cable out of the CC's wiring harness and pressed a longer one in its place.

If you're good at soldering, you could probably make a little two-socket board... Or you might be able to talk one of the solder-wizards around here (of which I am not one) into making it for you :)

Anybody know if the SCSI ribbon is longer on the 5xx harness? They are interchangeable with the CC's.

Or get a couple of crimp IDC connectors and some ribbon cable, and make one up to the desired length. If you don't have a proper crimping tool, a bench vise will do the job. Pliers even, if you're desperate. I did it with my teeth once, but I don't recommend that approach.

In that case, just get the IDC-50 male and lop off a redundant internal SCSI cable.

The ready-made cable is by far the most convenient. If not quite the most economical solution at $8.95, it's not far off. Even a single IDC-50M will be likely be a couple of bucks shipped.
