tested this afternoon.

Collected some months ago a CompactFlash Type II adapter, from Delkin devices:



Also collected very cheap, two brand new transcend CF cards (256 Mb)

Using my Powerbook 5300, the adapter and card were detected immediately, the card was formated and mac Os 8.5 was copied to the card.

I selected to start from the card, and the Powerbook booted right away...in silence.

Don't think the boot sequence is quicker, but the process cannot be easier.
