Couple of xserves

Picked up a couple of dual 1.33ghz G4 xserves today. One had a radeon graphics card. unfortunately the other had one of those Sonnet Sonata video cards. Now I have to figure out what to do with them. I keep saying I'm going to downsize but it's not working

I haven't figured out what to do with them. Never had one before so I thought they'd be interesting. They were pretty cheap so I took both in case I needed parts but they both seem to be fully functional.

They didn't come with drives so I stuck a single drive in one and 4 software raided in the other and installed 10.4. On the plus side, they both came with slot loading combo drives. I've started going through my Mac storage lockers so I'll hopefully find my server software. I may see if the 802.11n PCI card I have works in it. I'm sure it will with regular OSX but I'm wondering about OSX server.

Well, you can always upgrade an MDD with the dual 1.33GHz CPU module from the Xserve.

Of course, it may serve you better as an Xserve, but thought I'd mention the MDD option.

There's been one seller on Ebay for a couple of years with new Xserve 1.33GHz G4 modules for $75.

Too bad they can't boot into OS 9.

I was aware that the CPU modules were compatible but I've already got a couple of 1.42 and a 1.25 OCed to 1.33. I do have a couple with dual 1.25 modules but unless I decide to scrap a Xserve I'll leave things the way they are now. MDD CPU compatibility is one reason I decided to grab a second Xserve.

Not quiet but they don't seem any noisier than my 9600.

1U G5s are very noisy. Like pretty much any 1U machine is. It's surprising to me that the Xserve G4 could be as quiet as a desktop.

Is water wet?

Generally yes, but not necessary, there are ways to make water not wet or far less wet.
