Need help pointing to strange video problem on SE/30 Hardware 114 posts Apr 8, 2013 — Jan 31, 2014
My SE/30 is showing a very strange garbled image on the screen.

The caps have been replaced, and the computer works as expected otherwise.

The screen and other componants work fine with a different SE/30 board.

I looked through this web page on common problems, and didn't see a match.

Any ideas?

Looks like your analog board caps may be dying. Anytime board is good and video is bad the analog board is suspect. My classic and classic two look like that. I have to recap mine just have to start ordering the caps.

I'd start by thoroughly checking traces around the caps your replaced for continuity. If I read that right, you tested with the screen in your picture and a known good SE/30 board, so that leads me to question if something on the suspect logic board is corroded or shorted.

I like to take 91% rubbing alcohol and scrub the logic board with a toothbrush. This usually works great. RadioShack also made a spray electronics cleaner with a brush attachment that works well but I'm not sure they still sell it.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Does this image look like an error mode you have seen before from an SE/30 or other mac I suppose?

The screen etc works normally with another logic board.

From the appearance, I would guess that the VRAM ICs were damaged by the capacitor goo leakage. I've got a board in this condition, but only on half the screen.

The VRAMs are UC6 and UC7 on the SE/30 board. They are hard to find replacements for, but they do come up from time-to-time.

I had exactly the same problem with an SE/30 that persisted even after replacing the Vrams. So I doubt replacing them will solve the issue.

It did show up out of the blue on mine several months after fully recapping the logic, analog board including the PSU.

Only with a scope you can find the cause of this and then of course you need spare parts to fix it. It's definately somewhere in the video circuit on the logic board.

Anyone ever had this odd video issue before? other wise the thing works 100%, This se/30 was from insanboy, who was kind enough send me.

just recapped it, and then washed it as well. sill has this pin stripe effect.

ok looks like the electrolyte hit some legs of this chip (UE8)

and cooked part of the IC giving a permanent line.

that is my diagnosis :)

mine too, now that the caps have been done...

i'm not complaining, this computer is great i like it.

Couldn't i just install one of those XCEED 256 Grey scale deals in this??

Yeah, but wouldn't it be easier/cheaper to get another SE/30 motherboard?

I was going to first pester mcdermd :-)

I know he has 2 junk SE/30 boards, maybe the chip i need is good on that one from CC_333 with bad rom?

MY god!!!! XCEED Card is 900 BUCKs and 400+ for the B/W Monitor Video board hook up.

wow, prices have gone up even more 8-o

I don't have CC's board - he does. My junk SE/30 board has that chip but it's a surface mount part and looks a little crusty. I wouldn't think that chip would be more than $5 for a brand new one from places like DigiKey, Mouser or Jameco.

OH, so that chip might not be custom? Ah. Well I think i'm going to start an advanced SE/30 problems thread, I would like it to contain information, Issues specifically caused by leaking electrolyte. With Video issues, Pictures of the strange Video Output, then picture of the fixed solution.

(over and above what is offered Here: http://www.biwa.ne.jp/~shamada/fullmac/repairEng.html)

Do you think a heatgun + tinfoil ( like used in re-flows ) would work to remove and install new IC?

Also issues including BORNS FILTER / SOUND / SCSI / FPU?

For UE8, I think a Texas Instruments SN74LS166AD will do. About $1.25 from DigiKey or Mouser.

You'll need to float the old chip off with either a hot air reflow station or mask the area and carefully use a heat gun.

I want to do the same thing with the Macintosh Portable,

consolidate all the "messages" / Links from you (mcdermd),,, and what techknight has said, into a new Advanced Mac Portable thread.

Common Problems, The issue / What parts fix it, etc.

So far I would have to say the 12v Boost regulator seems to be a problem child with the back-lit.

And same with that non-back lit, Additionally, the Hybrid riser Board?

I think you and I looked up those regulator chips and they all seem to still be available.

You did the good ol pin to pin, chip to chip continuity? the electrolyte can eat out vias, and trace to pad junctions. and that will cause this.

yeah those darn vias :-)

saturday i will get some more time, i will do some probing just to make sure.

Isn't that why we have a wiki? I'm sure the "advanced problems" threads are going to clutter up the main forums as badly as uniserver's "Caps!" threads did a while back. That was a nightmare!

Again - OOM - You keep trying to moderate every thread? do you have a control complex?

Why would anyone give a FLYING F**K About what you have to say?

I do not care about your feelings, you are the most annoying SOB i have ever seen.

Ya offer nothing. Just flapping lips every single time.

Hell, a little while back, I even felt sorry for you and offered you ( for free ) a 32meg stick of ram, and I offered you a Great working 80meg IBM SCSI drive

and you told me to SHOVE it because i would not ALSO pay for the $12.95 shipping to you. I feel sorry for the guy i meet in public one day that reminds me of anything like you.

.... I'm sure the "advanced problems" threads are going to clutter up the main forums as badly as uniserver's "Caps!" threads did....
> :( Seriously??

The man puts huge effort into what has become both a very needed warning and valuable resource, and you whine about clutter?? Whilst yourself offering very little of value??

As far as I'm concerned, the "Caps!" threads should be stickied -- but that's not my call to make.

My apologies for the thread-jack here, but I couldn't just let that one fly - carry on the discussion on SE/30 bizarreness.

Well, in the modern world of computing we call those "trolls"

I don't want to get too involved here, but...

I don't think he's totally a "troll", but there's definitely some things he's said that are probably, shall we say, somewhat adversarial, in my opinion, and he should try to be more tactful if he wants to continue being a member here (it seems, judging by some unpleasant exchanges between he and several other members here, that he is somewhat close to being banned).

Whew! That is one long sentence!

Please feel free to quote this all you like. I am trying to share some objective observations, and you are all welcome to pass them along.

OK, I'm done now |)

c

Edit: Here's what Wikipedia says about the term "troll". Without more information on my end, I'd say that techknight is on to something, unfortunately :-/

I've read about the "troll" matter on Wikipedia and would say with all honesty that I do not intend to cause trouble, but rather that uniserver takes everything I say in a very strong manner. I would be inclined to think that he is "trolling" me moreso.

Can we just move forward? and forget all the crap?

Can we just move forward? and forget all the crap?
Agreed 1000%!
Let's just move along and be polite, shall we? Arguing and being rude gets people NOWHERE!

Did anybody come up with a solution to the video problem?

c

p.s. Also, I'd like to put in a good word or two for uniserver, for what it's worth; He's always been polite to me, and he has been very reliable and honest. I would be rather disappointed to see him get banned because of this.

Last night I received CC_333's SE/30 parts board. ( thank's man :) 8-)

Used my heatgun, and swapped chips.

ITs still doing the SAME pinstripe effect, I am pretty sure my issues are related to original OP's issue.

My next task is to go over the Schematics and do a Pin by pin, chip to chip continuity check.

( as Techknight Suggested )

Of corse this is going to take some time.

But it has to be done obviously.

One question, you know how some people make a jumper that goes from C6, 1uf 50v cap to the sound chip?

I thought that cap had something to do with the video?

It does show what bypassing a bad trace would look like.

I will admit I am more of an R&R kind of guy, the troubleshooting part can be way too time consuming for my liking.

Maybe as I go along, I'll be able to shot gun more common SE/30 VIDEO issues.

College of hard knocks.

I had a similar problem with my SE30 (vertical bars) and luckily I managed to fix it. First thing I did was look at exactly what was going on on the the screen. It's a bit hard to see on the image posted above, but it looks like 7 good pixels and one bad (incorrect) pixel. Does that sound right? If you have a higher res picture then it will be easy to count the pixels.

That way I was able to figure out the most likely cause of the problem, which in my case was a faulty address line caused by a bad via. The use of a spreadsheet helped me visualise the problem but still took a few hours to figure out. Someone with lots of experience could probably pinpoint this straight away, but that would be too easy ha!

ps: Out of curiosity did you try checking continuity between pin 23 on UC6 and pin 14 on UE8 (the 74LS166)?
