all i did was throw the drive in my os9 machine.

just use the standard Apple HD setup,

make some partitions,

drag and drop over 7.1 to the first partition,

That exact same config, seems to still be working in my IIsi.

granted the hd is installed internally and I have been using my trusty external 25 pin scsi passive terminator.
