They were actually serious about that - I still have the Getting Started guide that came with my LCIII, which states that while some LC PDS cards can be installed by the user, others must be installed by an AASP, because they require moving the logic board. Some things never change - Apple has never liked you lurking around in the deep, dark depths of your Mac.
