MDD - suggestions to make it quieter PowerPC 8 posts Oct 23, 2015 — Oct 23, 2015
Hi all,

I won an MDD dual 1.25GHz for about USD20 in an auction. I am surprised how loud it is.

Aside from replacing the HD, does anybody here have any suggestions on how it can be made quieter - new fan perhaps, replacement heatsink, replacement PSU etc. If so, which one should I replace it with.

Thanks very much for your help

yeah those dual cpu's create a tremendious amount of heat...

I would suggest removing the heatsink and wiping the old paste and applying some arctic silver.

maybe you could experiment with some heat pipe heatsinks and some custom mounting… but

that paste can dry out, causing the cpu's to run hotter then what they should.

There have been fan mods on the power supply also.  Same size quite, more com fans.  Do some internet search and there are a bunch of pages on this, at least there were.  Big fan should be pretty easy to find a higher com quiet replacement also.

It's possible the PSU wasn't replaced. They didn't call these Windtunnel G4's for nothing.

exactly my point.  Funny the big fan is dead in the middle of the machine.  Seems counter to cooling rather more like just whooshing air around.  Im sure thats why the G5's went fans in front and back.

I mean, if you really want quiet, replace it with a Quicksilver. :D

A powerful tower needs to proudly show its presence :p

Exactly; seen, not heard. :D
