As an update to this issue, automatic registrations have been disabled following the creation of about ten spam accounts within a few hours of it being enabled.

However, as a nice side-effect of the project, the pending registrations database has been cleared up through 2013-10-20 and the 68kMLA's database is now that much smaller.
