changed the resistor pack again... and changed the SWIM as well.

looks like all i have left is to do a dreaded pin to pin

ok tried something different, booted up 7.5.3, when i try to format a disk it bombs out and says Address Error, and gives the restart button.

i bet the issue is in the lines that go to the swim
