The only 680nothing machines i can get to play AIFF's is the Macintosh Portable and Macintosh PowerBook 100I am thinking its because of the hardware allows it.

I agree with you : an Apple Sound Chip may be required. I try a workaround by putting a Sound Manager 3.0 extension in the System folder (available in System Update 3.0 for 7.1] - just to test if the sound API of the Sound Manager could emulate in software what could not be done in hardware) but with no sucess in 6.0.7 ; perhaps could it work with 7.1.
