Start from CD, run

time cat < /dev/rdisk0 | wc -c

, or

time dd if=/dev/rdisk0 of=/dev/null bs=1m

, or something else. Assuming disk0 is internal HDD. If there is no error, then HDD is readable and likely not the problem.
