I will add: the temperature and speed (tachometer) sensors seem do work correctly (temperature rises with load, falls with idle, reported fan speed changes while I intentionally slow or stop fan spinning). Apple Hardware Test reports logic board okay, no problems found. No, thermal interface paste is not a problem. Fan in my specimen is simply driven at top speed. I do not know how fan control is achieved in this model, whether by PWM or potential (voltage) regulator or other; I guess, the governor / controller / regulator is kaput.
