I get laptops all the time with clogged heatsinks, which I am sure it has alot to do with early motherboard failure. 

I used to do service with a rental company, ColorTyme, and I got laptops left and right that would spontaneously die, or shutdown. Take it apart, and I get an 8th inch think layer of gunk on the heatsink.
