Cannot Connect to Ethernet on Slot Loading iMac G3

I was creating boot floppies for my Color Classic on my iMac G3 Slot Loading, then I left it alone for a few hours on an After Dark screen saver. I came back to it, and wanted to add some programs to the CC, but it didn't connect to the internet! Classilla just says the website cannot be found. I have tried multiple websites, confirmed the cable to be good, restarted the router, and restarted the iMac several times. I still get nothing. BTW I am using OS 9. Did my board just crap out on me?

does the iMac link to your 10/100 switch? does the link light illuminate?

I hooked the iMac to the router and I don't get a light. To be sure everything was good with the cable and that port, I hooked the MacBook to it, this time I got a light. Must be something with the iMac then.

No matter, I was planning to upgrade to AirPort anyway. I don't want to upgrade if the motherboard is failing, and the ethernet was just the first to go.

So, what could have caused the ethernet to fail? A failing motherboard? A spike through the port?

Try a different cable.

The cable isn't an issue. I was able to connect on the MacBook just fine.

I remember encountering similar symptoms a number of times over the years in a lab of iMac DV 400s running 9.2.2. If rebooting didn't fix it, resetting PRAM might, and if that didn't do it, a PMU reset seemed to do the trick on a couple occasions.

PMU will require getting at the logic board..PRAM will either be a button or a keyboard combination.

To reset the PRAM (parameter ram), hold down the Option, Command, P, and R keys while powering on the iMac. You can release them after the first chime. You'll likely notice this will change screen resolution to its default setting once the desktop comes up.

To reset the PMU (power management unit), you'll need to turn the computer over to access a special button located under the RAM access panel. This linked image shows and describes how: http://mrjcd.com/junk/PMU.jpg
