Avatars?
Since we don't seem to be doing the whole army rank by postcount thing currently (probably a good thing, it discourages people from posting useless junk), are we going to have avatars? I know that they really help me identify people fast. I'd tend to go for the small ones. Bigger ones disrupt the look of the forum and can make it load S-L-O-W on machines with slow connections.

whenever I've encountered avatars they've allways seemed overkill to me; ie:- they take an age to load.
I don't know why that is cos they're only a small graphic........

Rank insignias. Go with the classics, the heritage. 
yeah, i tend to agree, i miss the rank insignia! but i would think that midrange size avatars would work too.

Indeed. I suppose rank insignia could work say... about 6 months from now, but not at the moment. Point well taken.
i think there should be avatars to identify people quickly. i would only allow small ones, cause big ones would make the forum s...l...o...w for people with not that fast computers or with a slow internet connection. Maybe it´s possible that you can choose wether you want the avatars to be displayed or not.
Rank pictures would be fine.

I think its fine just how it is with no ranks/postcount, but small (as in 80x80) avatars would be ok. What would be really cool is if someone went through system 7 and pulled out all the icons, then there could bea build in icon set for the forums, and people could choose from that set.
Allowing ranks would just encourage some people to meaninglessly post to get their rank up.

Well, I've decided to try enabling avatars on a trial basis. We'll see how it goes. If anyone has any major objections, then I'll certainly turn them off. I'll also look and see if there's a way to have a preference to show/hide them.

I quite like avatars, they make it very easy to find people. They are more appropriate for sites such as FaceBook, but on forums like this it is always good too see who is replying to posts.
Oh, and if I see anyone with animated GIFs, they will be removed straight away!

In my innocence I thought that this notion had been well-and-truly canvassed shortly before the 68K MLA Forum went AWOL, with the preponderance of sentiment being for retention of the military conceit rather than the self-centred (even if that is very 'now') free-for-all of 'personal expression'. I agree that post count magnifies the contribution of machine-posters, but I cling, perhaps naïvely, to the idea that the quality and content of worthwhile posts will shine through, especially to those who have mastered the art of drawing sense from the written word without needing to be cued with graphic symbols.
Why not continue with what we had? The whole point of a system of ranks is not only to promote, but also to level. It's not a matter of accident that armies have few generals and many privates.

Remember the days when our signatures contained something along the lines of "Lieutenant Commander" or "Captain, Intelligence Operations"? The 2 words we used so often, "Covert Ops"? What happened? We had a perfect theme going until about Mid 2006.
Give the Army another go. The holiday breaks are over, it's time to get back on the front lines. Get inspired, read the archives.

I usually identify people by their avatars, which is why I find them really useful.
they can be untill some annoying guy starts using someone elses avatar. i've seen so many fights start that way
It needs a little adaptation to work with phpBB 2.0.22. There have been a couple of minor changes, plus the fact that we don't have some of the MODs installed that we did before. I'll get it up when I have a chance. I thought it'd just be better to get the forums online without worrying about the style for the moment.
i like the ability to choose your own avatar. it adds a sense of individuality to the forum.
and, like i said earlier the only thing the insignia's actually ranked was how much you posted...i don't need a visual representation of your ability to spam.

I sorta did that with my location indicator.
Now to get the other 99 or so users in on the Army signatures and locations.
i put my location and division in, and i would tend to agree, i think that we should go back to rank, i mean, we are the 68k Macintosh Liberation "Army". I miss the ranks!
Not meaning to sound negative but why do we have avatars when it was rejected so strongly whenever I proposed it on the "old" forums? I even did a poll and even though the majority wanted avatars it was always rejected. Anyway...thanks for the avatars.
You know what would be really sweet, is if a 16x16 (or something) rank insignia was composited over the bottom corner of the avatar. Best of both worlds. It wouldn't have to be any actual compositing, just an overlay with positioning in the web page, as long as the foreground image has transparency.
Well, I just decided that with the new forums, it was a good chance to minimise the postcount++ aspect. By removing the number of posts from the side panel and getting rid of the ranks it should help to do that.
That would be quite nice, but again, it would introduce the postcount++ factor...

You can have ranks AND avatars, but if we did that the Snitz Forums Ranks (the stars) would be most effective for their 16px height.

The old skin IS coming back, it's just getting tuned up for phpBB 2.0.22. (the old forums used phpBB 2.0.17)
The ranks are unclear to some, but it appears avatars are the way to go.
Recommendation: The admins should enable the Gallery Avatars and upload all the old ranks there incase some of us want the old look and feel next to our posts. Only problem I can see is that some of us will go for the highest rank possible. :/

not a big fan of avatars - but i always say that. bring back simple view!

That is a neat idea. I personally kinda liked my silver bar, but having a choice between it and a regular avatar would be nice.
Agreed. Not only is it pretty good...It's very good. I can't wait for the old theme to come back.
I don't care but given the option to turn them off, I would use it. Don't see the point in increasing download time when all people use is logos or pics of computers and cars.

And yes, Russian Caravan is one of the finest of all teas. A blend of fine China teas with a very dark, earthy flavour. It was the tea favoured by the Russian aristocracy and was transported there by camel caravan. As much as I hate everything about this corrupt, lousy God-forsaken period of history, I confess that being able to drink the tea that was reserved for the Russian aristocracy (or a similar imitation, anyway) is quite a unique privilege. So at least with regards to tea we are much luckier than those peasants of the Middle Ages who had to be content with their weak cups of Tesco tea-bag tea.

I like my avatar, however I do think some form of rank insignia is in order to go along with the whole 'Army" thing.
Thank goodness for no images on signatures... That's the ridiculous stuff there. All those forums with two lines of text in a post, and half a screen for some repetitive image. Which always sucks.
I voted none at all, but only because I like text only forums (call me old fashion). The only benefit to having avatars is recognizing a person by their "face" rather than name.

I use the Firefox browser, and the adblock plugin is awesome. It can be used to remove annoying avatars in signatures as well as ads!
