Codewarrior Pro 5 questions...

I think that the 3400c's are good Powerbooks. A USB key would surely work in Mac OS 8.6 or above.

Apparently after some googling around... I found that people acutally reccomended Codewarrior Pro 4 as the last version... beats me what whoever wrote up that list that indicates CW Pro 5 as the last version... its more like it installs and can probably build code but as a whole it doesn't work as an IDE. Apparently IDE 3.3 was the last version to support 68k which is what is in CW Pro 4.

Unfortunately it is extremely difficult to get CW 4 found a copy floating around on the internet but I have no idea if it is complete (it is 200+ Mb though)... I found a copy of CW Pro 5 that I am pretty sure is complete around 1Gb+ for that. I've been watching Ebay as well... I guess its a good thing I tried out CW 5 before I bought it just to find it was the wrong version!

Anyone know the taxonomy of the Codewarrior version numbers?

I know there were at least two sequences, because I have an academic copy of CW 10 Gold or some such, which predates the CW Pro versions, I think. I'm not sure if there was another sequence in between, or subsequently, or both.

How would you do that? With partitions? I was going to say there probably wouldn't be enough disk space, but I'm forgetting how tiny the system was back then!

I know some of the guys around here are using CW Pro 1 for compatiblity with each other... not sure why they chose that version over CW Pro 4 perhaps its less of a resource hog dunno?

I had started a Numbers spreadsheet of all of the versions of CodeWarrior using the Jonathan Hoyle info (in the link above) as a starting point. Then I went through the old metrowerks.com site snapshots at Internet Archive to try and nail down some missing release dates and extra info for each version, such as minimum host-OS version. I've even been trying to grab images of the box designs and datasheets for each version. Right now I'm focusing more on the later Pro versions since my target is PPC. The list is far from complete. It's a long process and I might never finish it, but it helps in my own searches.

Not sure if this helps but here's what I have for minimum host-OS version requirements:

Pro 5 requires v7.6.1

Pro 6 requires v8.6/v10 DP4 (last version to compile for 68K)

Pro 7 requires v8.6/v10.1

Pro 8 requires v9.2.2/10.1.3

Pro 9 only runs on OS X (v10.2)

One thing is for certain, copies of CodeWarrior, either disks or images, are amazingly elusive.

Dual partitions is one way, or one partition and an OS switcher. I can't remember the name of the switcher program, but you can happily fir 7.6.1 in 200-300MB, and laptop hard drives are so easy to come by, and under 10GB they cost next to nothing!

Don't forget... Pro 5 doesn't really run on 68k as the IDE doesn't support 68k at that point though the compiler does.

Yep, just make two partitions and put a system folder on each. OS 9 will fit in a couple of hundred MB or so (possibly less, I can't remember exactly), 7.6 in about 25 MB, both assuming you install only the system components needed for your Mac as opposed to a universal system with tons of extensions you don't need, and (in the case of 7.6) 68k code. Note that 7.6 actually has a bug in the installer - don't select Cusom Install as that in fact installs a Universal system - Easy Install will install a system just for that Mac, and you then have to go through it and manually delete the bits that you don't want, to save space.

Would the USB in fact work in 8.1, given that the first iMacs shipped with 8.1 and they had USB?

On most USB key I see, it says Mac OS 8.6 or later. It may work in 8.1, but didn't the iMac use a special 8.1?

Ah yes, now you mention it I think it did, or it at least had some Enabler or something. Not sure if the special-ness is related to USB or not, but it could well be.

I may have a bunch of programming software for 68k Mac.  It came with my LC.  But I don't have any of the books, so I don't know how useful the programs will be.  I'll have to go through the floppies.

They are a great machine...i almost got a 3400/200 once...but i think everyone knows about that...."The One That Got Away".

Anyway, you can dual boot one with 7.6.1 and other newer versions of the Mac OS...i have my 1400 set up in such a way. Just remember to give System 7 a big enough partition, as it is unable to read HFS+ volumes.

Also, the original iMac had a special copy of OS 8.1, which was especially made for the iMac.

Just realised I don't actually own 8.6, so I'll have to install 9 just to use USB. Bummer. Better check it has enough hard disk space to handle both.

I know you mentioned that you would have to use OS 9 for USB, but if you ever get 8.6 running, here is a link that should give you full USB mass storage device driver support under 8.6

I'm finding lots of links where people say flash drive support is available with special drivers for NT 4/OS 8 but I can't find links. There is one 32MB stick that has drivers for NT 3.5.1 and 7.6.1, but that forum post was so old that no responses would load as to what brand the stick was.

The 3400c is actually a PCI-based machine (which is why USB support exists), so perhaps one of the mods can move this to the correct sub-forum?
