Downgrading manually is pretty easy. Just run the Mac OS installer like any other time, except click the Options button and select the checkbox for "Perform Clean Installation." This will put the "old" OS into a folder called "Previous System Folder" and will install the "new" OS into the System Folder.

FWIW, I never had any problem with the modem in 9.1 on my Wallstreet. I never bothered trying it on 9.2.2...
