I heard of a scrap yard somewhere near Glasgow that gave people £50 if they took old (but working) Volvo Estates away as they are very difficult to crush and dispose of. A friend of mine got a 1988 Volvo V240 Estate in good condition with working air conditioning and electric windows, and got paid £50 to take it!
This phenomenum seems to occur most with ungainly items like pianos, which are impossible to shift otherwise.
