Customizing the OS 9 boot screen?

StartupScreen image dropped into the system folder, or mod the existing one with regedit.

You mean ResEdit.

If you put a .pict file named StartupScreen, it'll place a picture there during startup, but you won't see the progress bar, extension icons, etc.  You can also place StartupMovie in there with a QuickTime movie, which it'll play before it begins loading the OS.

To change the picture of the actual startup screen, you'd need to open up the System Folder with ResEdit and then paste in your own picture.  Make sure you make a copy of your System Folder before you do this.

You'll see the extension icons, just not the progress bar.

I once edited the OS 9.2.2 startup screen (via ResEdit, of course) to look like System 7.5.0 (the version immediately before the one where the now familiar Mac OS screen was introduced). It was quite neat, I thought, and it took a lot of trial and error, since I had to get it in just the right spot for it to look right.

I probably still have that modified System file floating around here somewhere....

I downloaded Resedit and managed to find the OS 9 boot screen in the System file. Is there a way to export it so I can find out what the dimensions of the image are? If there isn't a way to export it, does anyone know what size the image should be?

I think you can just open it, click on it, then edit -> Copy.  Paste into your favorite app.

I wasn't able to paste it into anything. I couldn't paste it into the Finder, Quicktime picture viewer or simple text. It's mostly a clean install of OS 9.1, I don't have much installed at the moment.

There are several startup "icons" in the system file. Changing the first one usually changes the one that is shown. But depending on the resolution and color-bit depth on boot will depend on which one is loaded.

I have a totally custom System 8 on my old G3-Wallstreet which was used as an experimental webserver years ago. Its StartUp Screen has Pai-Gon sitting on a monitor asking where the files are. Pai-Gon is a Panda Character from Miss Mab (second on here): http://www.mabsland.com/Adoption.html

Well, I have successfully changed the boot screen. This is why I wanted to do this.  Quite happy with how it came out. I'm planning on making one for OS 9.0.x and OS 9.2.x as well. If anyone's intersted, I can upload the image here. I used the resedit method btw.

I have the System 7 startup screen for OS 8.6 currently Took a little fiddling to get it right (and the progress bar loads out of the box) but it's cool. I love seeing "Welcome to Macintosh"

This might sound strange, but can I have a copy of the images to use in resedit? Wouldnt mind to look at something "new"

It's a little different but it's meant to fit in with the OS 8 platinum look.

Here is the OS 9.1 version. I included both png and PICT formats. For those of you that don't know, you must use the PICT format in Resedit, the png version won't work. I opened the PICT version in Quicktime picture viewer, copied it from there and pasted it into resedit. This was based on the image in -16506.

Added the OS 9.2 version. Again, I included both png and PICT formats and it is based on the image in -16506.

markyb86: That's similar to what I did, except it was just a straight copy out of Mini VMac (a cropped down screenshot, actually), so it had that old, pre-Platinum look, which I thought was more authentic (only thing is that the initial verson was black and white, so I need to update it for color).

I'm pretty sure I used a Color system 7 screenshot from google to make mine, haha.

The reason I put "Welcome to Macintosh" in the white box instead of just in the gray, is because I just resized the Mac OS 8 screen, used it's borders, and etc. and then pasted the picasso and the text into it.

Yeah, I kind of like to keep things stock, but I do enjoy playing around sometimes [] ]'> .

I should try looking for my version. Perhaps I can post it here for you?

Ahhh, great memories. Makes me remember when i first discovered resedit. I had a special cursor that i made myself using and editing the "Color cursor" extension. Pictures, icons and cursor editing is so fun and creative.
