It’s always had an annoying habit of taking 10 seconds to do anything when you turn it on, i.e. startup sound, 10 seconds of black then screen and startup.
That is normal with OS 9. (Not OS X though ;) )
Then I noticed it wouldn’t wake up from sleep sometimes, and you had to press command-control-start to reset it.
Reset the NVRAM.
So I did that, and still it wouldn’t start up today from batteries, no matter what I tried.
Bad battery? Battery not charging for some reason?
I took it back to the office and plugged it in. It immediately whirred and the power light came on,
That is normal if the internal backup battery has been drained. It also happens with PMU or w/e reset.
