A Wallstreet Resurrection
Last month, a few Wallstreets came my way, one of which was dead, with a display that sometimes worked, sometimes flickered weird pixels all over the place, and had a completely nonfunctional backlight.
After a bit of a pull-apart, which is the thing to do in such situations
, I find the inverter board has arced through the plastic surrounding it, leaving rather a mess...

After a bit of a clean, it's a bit nicer...

Now, digging around a bit further, I find a liquid spill inside the display! ungh... not sure what it was, but it was a little oily, a little everywhere, and I suspect had kept the plastic around the inverter damp enough to conduct electricity. After that was cleaned up, I now have this:

Cool. I love doing take aparts. You never know, sometimes it's just a silly little thing like a bit of dirt or a loose connection that keeps a machine from working. One more Wallstreet clawing it's way back from the grave.

Annoyingly, the back of the LCD is pretty frustrating. I'm used to hardware that's solid objects that click together, screw together, and fit in only one way. That's not the case with an LCD on the inside, it's all tape and foil and glue - reminded me more of third grade art class than the usual geekery .
However, eventually it all came together:

Hah, that looked weird when I clicked on the photo of it booting - looked like I was looking through the screen at myself.
Well done! They're mostly nice, sturdy machines I think - picked up someone's Lenovo Thinkpad yesterday and couldn't believe how flimsy it felt in comparison. I'm sure this machine will make someone happy. Mine makes me pretty happy when it behaves itself!

Aw, you should have taken the opportunity to make your logo glow. Cut a small hole in the foil where the Apple logo meets up with the back of the LCD (and remove the mylar sticker over the Apple if it is applied). The Apple logo will faintly glow. It isn't as bright as a Pismo, but it does glow in the dark.

I did get the chance for some more silliness with a bit of further wallstreet disassembly. One of the other wallstreets (the left one at http://www.danamania.com/temp/greed.jpg ) has a busted screen, which I pulled to pieces, to the point it wasn't going to go back together.

Can you get rid of the screen altogether and plug an external monitor into it? Then it would look like an Amiga. Not sure of the point, but it would be cool.

Great job with the repair. That Wallstreet looks to be in great condition -- it must have gotten that spill early on in its lifetime. (Or is the perfectly clean case one of those Danamania Photoshop tricks?)
I have a 12-inch Wallstreet with a torn ribbon cable. The cable is for powering and controlling the backlight. I haven't gotten around to a repair attempt yet. I don't really know how to repair a ribbon cable. Any advice?
What are the chances you'll make that desktop picture available for the rest of us to use?
