Big Quadra 700 Problem

68kMLA Networking 77 posts Jun 8, 2007 to Dec 29, 2007
I recently got a Quadra 700. It has some weird accelerator card with wires which I don't know what to connect to. This Quadra won't start up the way it is. The LED comes on and the fan whirrs but nothing else. I would have tried to use it without the card in, but I can't get it out. Where do I connect these wires to?

I have an accelerator for my 700 that is a bit different from that one, but it also has a card that fits the ROM slot. The ROM slot works like a DIMM slot. You have to pull the metal clips on the ends back and tilt the board to a 45 degree angle to get it out.

I have the same type of wires. One of them hooks around a leg of the oscillator and another clips onto a resistor near the CPU socket. I think you may have the same one I do, the Newertech PowerPump, maybe an earlier or later revision because your ROM board looks a little different from mine.

I don't use mine as an accelerator, though. I rehoused my 700 into a IIvx case and the ROM card sticks up too high to fit under the drive tray. I left the fans installed, though as additional cooling, which was really what I bought it for because I have a 601 card that had a heat problem when I first bought it.

I don't understand how this accelerator could possibly work reliably because I never was able to get mine to work. One or both of the wires kept removing itself from where it was supposed to be. The one that clips to the resistor is especially bad. The slightest vibration makes it fall off.

Those clock chipping kits tend to cause all sorts of problems for Macs these days. I'd say its probably just the hardware getting old. :(

There must have been a Power Mac Card in here before because the control panel for one is there.

The Q700 has System 7.5.1, Lotus 1-2-3, Word 5.1a, and Norton Utilities 3.0 (with the Norton emergency disk in the floppy drive!) It even has some person's old documents.

I looove reading old documents :) Nit to be nosy, or idiotic, just because when I had my first used computer, a 486 laptop, it came from a Murphy Brown writer. It had a lot of funny things on it...Unfortunetly I kinda killed that lappy& HD...

If that accelerator is just for clock-chipping, it seems so complicated!

These days, with the 68k Mac hobby so small, it seems so easy to say "If you can't solder, you can't overclock" but back then, I guess it was easier for mainstream users to install that than resolder the crystal.

It came with Hypercard stacks about the human anatomy. It also has a document called "karen's resume" and "thesis". It even has a System Sound of, "Space…the final frontier" Whoever owned this mac messed with the System folder too much. I'm reinstalling the system right now. I won't be able to use the copy of NOW Utillities since that was in the System folder. I think that vital parts of Norton may have been in there too… But it doesn't matter because I still get MS Works, MS Work 5.1a, and Lotus 1-2-3. It has an hp branded HD inside of it. It seems to be a bit unstable so I will be making backups. It replaces the spot on my desk previously occupied my my LC III. The LC III is moving to the basement to resume it's life as a Windows 3.1 emulator with softwindows and expected to be set up as a print server with a Laserwriter sometime.

Heh, I discovered my 9500 sounds the red alert warning klaxon from the original Star Trek whenever it encounters an error or something that needs attention.

I just installed Mac OS 8.1! But there's one problem…The monitor & sound control panel just hangs when I try to open it! Everything BUT that works great. It somehow changed into B&W mode at some point so now I'm stuck in B&W! It's disgusting-looking. How can I get the control panel to open?

(I have 20mb of RAM so I have enough of that)

Imagine how scary that would be...someone reading your old files ands tuff. :O

I'm sorry...i just consider it to be unethical, thats all. All HDs i get, after i get any useful software off 'em are formatted.

It's interesting reading the resume of a physical therapist. :p

But is it possible to get color back on my Q700? :'(

As a last resort you could maybe set the resolution you want on another machine running exactly the same OS and copy the display preferences file over.

I kind of think it's their own lookout though - if you left a file of documents in a street or gave them to someone else, then you'd expect that they might get read by someone, no? It's really just common sense to delete anything that you consider to be private before letting someone else have your old computer.

Yeah...i see your point, but i still think its unethical to read someone else's documents without their permission. Look at it this way...lets pretend you don't own a car, but you see one sitting in the street unattended with the driver's door open, the windows down, the key in the ignition, and the engine running. Would you drive off in it "just because its common sense to not do that"?

Btw, MacTCP, maybe you could enable the control strip and try changing the bit depth that way...unless someone's mucked about with the contents of the Control Strip Modules folder, there should be two modules for graphics settings: one for changing colour depth, another for resolution

The control strip doesn't work with Q700s. I tried to install ColorSwitch Pro, but it made it freeze when the startup got to that extension. It's so weird! I

t's like it doesn't want me to use color or something.

I'm going to install 7.5, switch the colors, and upgrade to 8.1. If 8.1 switches it back to B&W, I'm deleting it and running 7.5.

I think monitor and sound is a PPC control panel. It was probably installed when there was a PPC card in the machine. You will need a system 8 disc and install the 68k control panels. You probably are going to find other PPC specific bits installed on your system, as well.

The control strip doesn't work with Q700s.
Who said that? The control strip works on any Mac running 7.5 or later. Although Apple used to say its a PowerBook-only feature, it'll work on any Mac...i've used it on a Q700 (mine), a C650 (not mine), all the LCs (mostly mine), several Power Macs (mostly not mine), Performas (mostly not mine), and other non-PowerBook Macs, and i've never had a problem with it.

Btw Quadraman, in System 7.6 -> 8.1, Monitors and Sound will work on most 68k's.

I did a clean reinstall of 8 when I installed it. (which the monitors & sound control panel was installed with so it should work) Control Strip wasn't installed by default. I copied all control strip related files over from my 4400 running the exact same system to the Q700. I opened it after putting the files in their places and restarted. When I opened it it said, "This isn't compatible with your macintosh" or something like that. I don't see how the control strip should have any hardware requirements. I also tried resetting the PRAM which didn't work.

System 7.5 is installing right now. I'll see if I can get color with that. ;D

When the control strip was first released with 7.5, although it would work with any Mac if you installed it, it was intended as a PowerBook only feature, and was only installed automatically if you were on a PowerBook. Maybe the 4400 had a PowerPC only version of it or something...who knows. Apple did weird things sometimes.

Apple did weird things sometimes.
Especially with the 4400. I think it is very fast, but the case is so hard to get back together. You get one side on and the other pops off.

7.5 is installed…with color! I backed up the System folder and unblessed it. Now I'm going to try and give 8.1 one more chance. If I am not satisfied with 8.1, then I'll try 7.6. If 7.6 starts messing up, I'll run 7.5.

7.6 is just as bad as 8. I'm sticking with the stabe 7.5. I guess when the 7.5 installer said it was making my macintosh happy, it really was!

My Quadra 700 came with a nubus etherent card inside of it. I don't know how to set it up. It has coax ethernet jack and a wide phone jack ethernet port. I connected a cat5e patch cable from the wide phone jack to the ethernet hub of my network. I turned on appletalk with the "ethernet slot 1" and turned on file sharing. The light for the jack my Q700 is connected to on the hub didn't light up to show it was working like my other macs. I'm not sure how to make this work. However, the light on the nubus card keeps blinking. How can I get this to work?

You probably have to play with the TCP/IP control panel. Set it to use DHCP and it should work, or at least get you closer to working. I'll check what mine is set at and post back.

Setting to DHCP doesn't help. Does having dual interfaces make a difference? If I need a special driver or something could someone give it to me?

It might make a difference. I use the AAUI port on mine for ethernet, but I do have a Nubus ethernet card around here someplace I could try but it might be a while as I have other projects on my workbench at the moment.

Whenever I try to start my Q700 with Open Transport enabled, I have to force quit the finder and then the file sharing extension before it will get to the desktop. I upgraded to the latest OT compatible, and and it still doesn't fix it. AppleTalk says to check my cable connections when I try to use ethernet slot 1. What's going on here?! Open Transport isn't supposed to do that! > :(

(1) The having-to-force-quit only happens when Open Transport is loaded at startup.

(2) When the computer is turned on and their is an ethernet cable connected to the card, the light on the card blinks and doesn't stop.

(3) The having-to-force-quit thing still happens with the ethernet card out so it isn't the card's fault.

(4) I found that my card was an Asante card so I installed Asante's drivers. It didn't make any difference.

My Quadra 700 came with a nubus etherent card inside of it. ... However, the light on the nubus card keeps blinking. How can I get this to work?
If your NIC in the Quadra is 10Base-T (inevitably so if it has a Thin-net coax. connector as well as an RJ-45) and the hub (or the switch) is 10/100Base-T, the blinking LI LED shows that autonegotiation between NIC and hub/switch is failing because the NIC knows nothing about such new-fangled nonsense. (Is it a hub or a switch? There is a difference.) And the hub/switch doesn't believe that anyone could possibly be so higgerant about autonegotiation and keeps trying ...

Solution: interpose a 10Base-T hub with uplink port between the NIC and the 10/100Base-T hub/switch.

What System is on the Quadra? OT is not compatible with Systems older than 7.5.3. For such older Systems you must select Classic Networking (AppleTalk) using Network Software Selector. However, Asanté's EtherTalk Installer 5.6.1 should have made the right choice of software for your NIC based on card and System, but it would not have uninstalled any already-installed OT. If you don't need OT, put the components into a single folder and store them in say, Utilities, in case you need them for a later upgrade of System.

de

I'm running 7.5.5. I have a 10/100 Switch that I'm using. I just remembered I have a spare 10 hub so I can use your solution with uplink!

When Open Transport is loaded, the Monitors contol panel causes the computer to lock up! Nothing besides Monitors! That must be why I was stuck in B&W in Mac OS 8.

This is what OT does:

Makes me force quit the Finder and File Sharing Extension at startup. (which it did in Mac OS 8 as well!)

Makes the computer freeze when opening the Monitors or Monitors & Sound Control Panel. (which it did in Mac OS 8 as well!)

I'm confused. :?:

From what I've seen, OT causes trouble and never good (on my Q700 at least). I don't know why, but it looks unfixable to me.

I guess I'll use classic networking. I can't go higher than 7.5.5 then, but I don't care. From what I've seen, I'll need two control panels. The MacTCP control panel and the Network control panel. I think I know where to get those.

Your problem with Monitors CP may be fixed by trashing its Preferences, and then restarting. You don't need Monitors and Sound CP, and even loading it may be causing some of your problems. Shift it into Apple Extras against a future need. If you have downgraded from 8.1, was it by erase-and-install or by clean install? Your unnecessary M&C CP may reflect the presence of other undesirable CPs and extensions also.

If you are using 7.5.5, you will be better off with OT 1.1.2, which is downloadable from Apple. Be sure to install the Asanté stuff before OT 1.1.2 so that you do not get any older software than 1.1.2 re-installed.

OK. So you can also use TCP/IP. Have you configured that? You have mentioned DHCP in one of your later posts, so that is probable. The Quadra 700 has on-board ethernet via an AAUI port. If you have an AAUI/RJ-45 adapter (often miscalled an 'ethernet transceiver'), use that instead of the NIC. If that works, the NIC is, despite the link light, as kablooie as it is seeming to be. You may, or you may not, still need the 10Base-T hub between the 700 and your switch when you use the on-board ethernet.

de

When I had 8 installed the Monitors&Sound didn't work.

So I deleted the System Folder and reinstalled 7.5

7.5's Monitor control panel worked fine…

Until I got 7.5.3 where it got messed up because of…

Open Transport! Open Transport messes up everything.

I had OP 1.1.2 when this all started.

I had configured TCP/IP.

Since Open Transport is the root of all my problems…

I'm going to use MacTCP instead.

EDIT 1: I experiecnced these bad problems with the card out as well, so the card isn't what's causing this. Open Transport is the root of these problems.

EDIT 2: The same error happens with onboard ethernet. This conforms my theory in EDIT 1.

I don't think you can have both Monitors and Monitors & Sound on the same system. I am sure one of them is a PPC control panel. I remember from my last 7.6 install that one of them is definitely PPC only. I think there is also a Quadra video control panel or extension that you may need.

I don't have the two control panels. Only monitors.

A fresh install of 7.5.0 works fine with no having to force quit from the finder at startup or having the monitors control panel lock up

Fresh 7.5.3 and later with or without open transport are having to force quit from the finder at startup and having the monitors control panel lock up

(BTW, I was able to include the control strip in the 7.5.3 update! It freezes when I try to change colors so changing colors is impossible in 7.5.3 and higher)

What is causing this? When I use classic networking, it lets me turn on appletalk and file sharing, but in reality is doing absolutely nothing. The light for it's port on the 10baseT ethernet hub doesn't light up. That is with having the uplink idea equill came up with.

This puts it into 3 separate problems:

Anything that switches colors/resolution freezes in 7.5.3 or later.

I have to force quit the finder before the desktop appears in 7.5.3 or later.

I can't get my nubus ethernet card to work.

I don't mind running 7.5.0 on my Q700. It's unique startup is the best I've seen. So I guess I can hammer off the first two questions! Now it's all down to this:

Why isn't my nubus ethernet card working? I set the options correctly in it's control panels. Is there a way to get this to work or is it totally dead?

Could it be that the card is dodgy and the root of all these problems? Have you tried removing it and seeing if the other problems go away?

The other problems don't go away when I take the card out. It's hard to tell whether the card works or not because I can turn appletalk and file sharing on with the card recognized and chosen, but it doesn't actually do anything. The light representing the port on the ethernet hub the Q700 is connected to doesn't light up.

:?:

...Now it's all down to this:
Why isn't my nubus ethernet card working? I set the options correctly in it's control panels. Is there a way to get this to work or is it totally dead?
If your Asante card has a twin stake pin jumper position marked JP1 the jumper plug should be hanging off to one side, not bridging the two pins. When a good straight thru, not cross over, patch cable is connected to a good hub the green led should light even if there is no network traffic. The blinking yellow led is an indicator of any attempted traffic, not necessarily successful traffic, I think.

It has one marked JP2. Should I do anything?
Do you have a specific Asante model number marked on the card, like MacCon 610 or MC+IIET? For the 610 JP2 should also be hanging to the side not bridging, for most modern hubs. I do not have a manual for the +IIET but would guess similarly. It is really important to get that Asante solid green led on in order that any of the comm software has a chance or working. If your hub is really old and does not support link integrity JP2 might need to be bridged. A model on the Asante would help if the exact manual can be located.

It's an MCiNB.

Google Result:

The Asante MCiNB Nubus adapter does not support N-Way auto-negotiation, so it does not work with most 10/100 devices when directly connected.

I think I fixed this if you look about a page back where I uplinked a 10baseT hub. It made the flashing green light stop, but now there's no light at all.

Is it dead? ;D

Don't have the manual for that one, but on other earlier models JP1 and JP2 if present either forced one of the two ports or autosensed which port to use, and the other jumper would disable/enable the link integrity feature (disable for really old hubs predating 10base T spec only) underlying the green led. I think you can experiment with JP1 and JP2 without fear of killing any components. The usual default was jumpers not bridging for most cases, enabling autosense of which port and sensing link integrity. No green led at the Asante usually means bad cable, cable not seated deeply enough, crossover cable instead of straight thru patch cable, or hub port not powered, but could be dead Asante card also.

I installed the drivers. When I made appletalk active it said something like,"There was an error. We'll use localtalk instead." I used the Asante Troubleshooter which came with it and these were my results. They were the same when using my 10/100 switch or my 10 hub. It said if you failed the loopback test to call tech support in the manual that was also in the link you provided.

Now it's really dead, right? More or less, that's what it just told me. ;)

That's pretty much it unless there is a bad cable connection. You can do a really thorough visual inspection of the MCiNB board looking for leaking electrolytics, corrosion, solder shorts, and any engineering change jumper wires that might have broken off, but right now a spare board to try would really be nice. That comment about excessive collisions sounds more like a hardware failure than a mis-configuration or bad connection.

Given the choice between replacing the NIC card and finding an AAUI dongle, I'd go for a dongle. It keeps one of your few Nubus slots free. If you ever manage to pick up a PPC upgrade, you're going to lose the use of one of the Nubus slots because the PPC board intrudes on it's physical space and you only get two to start with and you don't want the one that's left taken up with something that you can use one of the peripheral ports for.

The card does look a bit fishy… There's actually a video card in one of the slots. It doesn't work with my monitor because the resolutions don't match up. Keeping my nubus slots free sounds like a great idea. I forgot they made dongles. There are often very interesting looking nubus cards around and it will be nice to have slots open.

BTW, if anyone figures out why those other things weren't working, I'd be happy to know.

I know, but software is different to data. ;)
Well, keeping the software infringes copyright law, but reading (probably not keeping/copying) the documents is probably legal :p

Maybe, but to me, a rare extension/control panel/utility/app is probably of more use than some ancient Clarisworks doc from 1992 :p

I know, but software is different to data. ;)

I don't see the problem in keeping software that comes installed on a hard drive IF it is something that is no longer readily available for purchase. You mean to say that if I am searching for a rare piece of software for years and buy a computer that happens to have it installed on it's hard drive I'm expected to erase it?? I don't think so. If the copyright holder wants to re-release it for sale, then fine, I'll do my best to come up with the money to buy it, but if they insist on keeping it off the market for whatever reason, I'm keeping it. Since they aren't selling it anyway, it does not hurt them in the least if I continue to use it because it is not a lost sale. They can argue that it prevents me from buying the latest version, but how can I buy the latest version when it runs on OS X and the computer I am running the older version on can't run OS X? How can they claim damages from the use of a piece of software that isn't even being sold?? One person merely using a piece of obscure software that is no longer marketed should not constitute an offense so long as that person is merely using it and not copying and distributing it to everyone who asks for it.

I'm not saying I wouldn't keep software found on an old machine (I never have, but only because none of my machines have ever come with anything interesting on them!), but just that technically it does infringe copyright law to use commercial software that you don't own a licence for. You're right, it probably should be legal to do so, as it doesn't hurt the company that made that software as they're not offering it for sale and you're not in the market for the newest version, but that doesn't mean it is legal under the laws we have. Not that they would be likely to try to sue you or anything though, even if there was a way they could find out that you were using their software without a licence. To be honest, "pirating" old "abandoned" software is really the only way to get very old machine working and doing interesting things.

Yeah...the only exception is unless you're very lucky and you come accross some vintage boxed software, or if you're like me and you've been using the machines since they were new and therefore have a large amount of software available for use.

Whenever I want to get files off of my Q700, I have to boot my iBook into OS 9. That works fine. In OS X, it lets me select my Quadra 700 and even select for Macintosh HD to mount, but it never does. My iBook takes about 5 min. to start up so this is inconvenient to have to start up in OS 9 just for this. I feel that Mac OS X is incompatible with classic networking. Am I right? If so, is there some third party software that will let me connect to my Q700 even though it uses classic networking? I think I may of heard of one, but I can't think of the name. :?:

Can you boot OS X into classic and network with the Quadra?

Here is what happens in all possibilities. This isn't a serious problem since I can always boot into OS 9 if I have to, but if anyone happens to know a solution, please tell me:

When started up in pure OS 9 on the iBook, things go well connecting to the Q700.

When using the OS 9 classic environment on the iBook, things don't go well connecting to the Q700.

When started up in OS X Jaguar on the iBook, things don't go well connecting to the Q700.

I'm sure that OS X can't connect to macs that use classic networking because

OS X can connect to my other two macs, both with Open Transport rather than Classic Networking. I think there may be a piece of software that bypasses this. If anyone knows of one, please tell me.

I don't know if they can connect. I remember when I was having problems with the 601 card in my 700 that when it wasn't working, Open Transport wouldn't load up at all. I could see the icon on screen when it tried to boot up but there would be a red X through it. When the 601 was working, though, it would load and run normally. I think maybe OT might not work on an 040.

Edit

According to this

Open Transport was released at the same time as the 9500, so it probably wouldn't work on a 68k machine, also Open Transport was even dropped when OS X was released, so you'd be stuck using MacTCP on the 040 machine, which probably can't communicate with what OS X uses.

This is the reason why I collect 601 upgrade boards. It makes using the earlier machines so much easier when they are able to use newer technologies.

I can confirm that Open Transpor definately will run on 68ks. I've used it in System 7.1 and 7.5 on my Classic II, LCII and LCIII, and in System 7.6 and OS 8.1 on my LC475, LC630 and Quadra 700. Actually, if you're running System 7.6 or later, you have no choice but to use Open Transport, Classic Networking won't run on 7.6 or later. But i can confirm OT definately will work on 68030's and 68040's.

The subject of filesharing between OS X Macs and OS 9-and-under Macs was explored in this thread.

AppleTalk is not supported in Tiger, but connection from client older Mac to server Tiger Mac is possible over TCP/IP. If older Macs don't 'do' TCP/IP, do a double-hop from oldie to a Mac with System 7.5.5-9.22, and thence to Tiger. The AppleTalk difficulty does not exist in Panther and below. Most failures to share can be overcome by making the newer Mac the server; by sharing whole volumes rather than folders; by leaving the LAN permanently connected, or at least by making all connections before startup; by using static (manual) IP addressing in the LAN, and by offering a blood sacrifice to the deity of your choice at the outset.

It is also a great convenience to use your OS X 'short name' as the name of the Owner on all Macs in your private network, and the same password, too.

de

I was browsing System 6 Heaven and I read that the File Sharing Extension from System 7.5.3 is required for OS X to be compatible with it. I took the 7.5.3 extension and dropped it in the 7.5.0 system folder and OS X could connect to the Q700! ;D

That's incorrect. I am not sure how any "vintage mac enthusiast" could not know that, but I digress.

Anyway, it's good to hear the AAUI converter/adapter/"transceiver" did the trick. OT will definitely work on a 68k mac, so don't let that confuse you. It sounds like you simply had a flaky Nubus NIC.
Open Transport is incompatible with System 7.5.0. In the read-me it says that it "isn't supported" under 7.5.0, only 7.1.x and 7.5.3 and higher. The installer doesn't stop me from installing it, so I think it's worth a try, since I use DHCP for internet and MacTCP can't use that. I'm pretty sure it will work. Apple said System 7.6.0 wouldn't work on my 4400, but it installed fine.

It turns out that the read me was just bologna. Open Transport works just fine under System 7.5.0. I'm actually posting from it right now.

Yes…I think I've figured out the odd behavior!! :) I realized that the Quadra 700 cursor can move off the right edge of the screen and come back. I looked at the back of the Quadra and there was another video card! So I think these "lock-ups" at startup were the default monitor being non-existent. The monitors and sound control panel was opening only on the other screen I believe.

I'll remove the video card and see what happens…
