Loaded BW G3 With OS 9.2 490mb RAM!!!!!
I got this one on ebay, has a 20gb HD, Upgraded GPU, 400mhz g3, 490mb of ram, and it is a rev B!!!!!!
Having lots of fun with it, I posted from It!!!!
Just one issue,
It does not have OSX nor do I own the full version.
I am shure it will be faster with OSx as it is multitasking. OS 9 is not.

Cool - you're welcome to join my club of G3 advocates (basically we believe that G3s are the best Macs that ever have or ever will be made, any newer Mac has no advantage over them and is a waste of space that could otherwise be filled with , and Apple suck more than Microsoft ever have or ever will because of their decision to kill the G3s 
). Stick Tiger on there - it's brilliant on my G3 400/640 MB/32 MB Radeon, and as yours is a Bluey you won't even have to spend a week fiddling with XPostFacto in order to get it to work!

My Digital Audio 533 has a faster (133mhz) bus, an AGP 4x slot, faster CPU than fastest G3 B&W, more PCI slots for expansion, namesake Digital Audio sound processor, Gigabit ethernet, a better keyboard and mouse, can use ADC monitors, is bootable from firewire or usb drives, will take more memory, and the G4 has Altivec for running enabled apps. The upgrades that are available for the G4 machines are also better and the G3 is being dropped in Leopard. No advantages, indeed.

My DA only cost me $150 with keyboard, mouse, and shipping from Texas to New Jersey.
My G3 cost nothing, and that included two LCD monitors, an Extended II keyboard and 640 MB of good-quality RAM
(A DA is therefore infinitely more costly to acquire than a G3, which I think is more important than any supposed benefits of one - it isn't infinitely better!)

My first (and probably only) "modern" Mac too, before that the 6100 was my newest!
Bah! The 9600 with the Mach V motherboard and 350mhz 604eev gave the G3's a run for their money on most benchmarks back in the day and had more expansion slots, which was why they re-introduced them after they were discontinued to make way for the beige G3.
Make sure you do the firmware upgrade before you try to put OS X on that, or put in a G4 CPU... or else.

I'm sure I've heard of iMacs being permanently killed by attempts to install OS X without updating the firmware, so maybe the situation is the same for the B&W - pretty silly though, as surely a lot of people aren't aware of these firmware updates and think they can just put OS X on?

Of course you can, as long as you believe in all of the things that I said that we believe in - that would of course mean getting rid of any Macs newer than G3 that you happen to have, as otherwise having those suggests that you think there is some reason to have a Mac newer than G3 I would possibly let you off keeping an Intel Mac, as long as you stick something over the Apple logo and install only Windows on it, as then it's a PC not a Mac

Not really a possibilty, I'm afraid - I never see free G4s offered and don't have anywhere in mind that has G4s about to be scrapped (I had my eye on those G3s for quite a while as they were clearly due for replacement, given the standard corporate hardware lifecycles!), and even if I did find one, I don't have anywhere in my room to put it now that the space under my desk is occupied by the G3.As soon as you find your own G4 you'll change your mind!

So you can't find a cheap low-end G4 anywhere? The low end ones are at the point of being sold very cheaply, if not yet given away. But then again I guess if you're G3's running well enough it shouldn't be a worry - unless Apple really pull a rabbit out of their hat with Leopard. As for the lack of space - think creatively. For example, I don't have space in my bedroom for my much-coveted pool table, so I was thinking of gluing it to the ceiling and filling all the balls with helium. Then I can just get some of those anti-gravity boots whenever I want to play (you can get them from Bunnings, I think they're made by Adidas' industrial subsiduary).

Well, you know, I was gonna offer to give you my dual 500 G4 since I got the MB, but since you've convinced me that anything newer than a G3 is rubbish, it's already been hauled to the dump. Not bad, at least it's not an Intel box trying to be a Mac anymore (we all know that real Macs have real Mac processors and run real Mac OSes, don't we now? And are made by Apple Computer Inc, of course
) - I've always thought a big sticker with that round blue Windows "orb" would look rather nice in the centre of those laptops' lids though, no? Lol
I've said it before, but I'll say it again - you come up with such funny stuff! As for finding a G4, it's certainly not worth buying one unless it's going to be your main machine, in my opinion. And I never see freebie ones, while even if they did ever come up on Freecycle or somewhere that sort of thing goes so quickly that you never have a chance of getting it. You'd really need to know a company that had a whole load of them that they just wanted gone, like with my G3. I love my G3 anyway - how do you think he'd feel if first he was abandoned by his former owner, then by Apple, and then even by me? I just like being at the cutting edge when it comes to what software I have on my machines, that's why I'm disappointed that I will once be stuck in the past when it comes to Macs, having been at that bleeding edge for just a few months.What makes you think I wasn't serious? Actually, G4's do get high prices particularly at the high end of the ladder, and especially in Britain. I've seen UK prices compared to USA prices and they are a lot more expensive over there. They paid more for them new so they don't depreciate as fast as they do here.What makes you think I wasn't serious? Judging by a completed listings search on eBay, they start at around £40 and you can easily get some sort of G4 for under £60. Still quite a lot of cash, especially once you've added the £20 or so to that which you'd need to have something so heavy posted to you, unless you have a car and find a machine in your city. And then you'll probably need RAM, a better graphics card etc on top of that. Way too much money for me, and I do kind of think that anything is too much for a Mac unless it's going to be your main machine - it seems a waste if it's just a second or third machine for me to play around with! Especially given that I already have an OS X Mac so don't really need another one
Ah well, just wondering for down the track when your Leopard cravings start – you know, the “Aw, I really wish three-quarters of my 500 gig hard disk was taken up with historical backups” sort of routine.
I think you were spot on when you said that desktop OSes have reached the point where there’s little new to be added to them. So now they seem to just think of the features that will consume the most resources (in order to justify ongoing hardware sales, of course)!

Well I've already got Vista for these purposes
I've already turned off Vista's "previous versions" feature anyway (ya know, the one that Leopard ripped off and stuck a silly interface on top of ) Hopefully Leopard will be nice and buggy like Vista is too, just to make sure that I'm really glad that I'm not running it!That would be Apple's thinking, yes - I can't see that MS could care less whether you buy a new PC or not, as long as you run the newest version of Windows. In fact, I think they make a lot more money on the sale of a retail Windows licence to someone upgrading an old PC to Vista than they do on the OEM licences that are included with new PCs. Possibly they just feel that they have to follow Apple in introducing this stuff, and also that they might as well exploit the graphics capabilities of modern PCs. Though now it seems as though Apple is following MS, as the transparent menu bar is just so Vista.
