update:

after giving it another shot on my powerbook g3 (the laptop that originally had worked fine) i'm finding everything going fairly smoothly.

so it appears a leopard/java update may have fixed part of the transfer problem on the NEW macbook pro? that made it work halfway but still not be able to send disk images TO the IIgs?
