Well it arrived today and utterly bowled me over! What a wonderful little machine it is, and it works like a dream. I like the Newton MessagePads but the eMate adds that one thing that was missing - a built in keyboard. No need to worry about handwriting recognition now..

Mine has the usual problem of dead batteries but at least it came with a Newton power adaptor. I'm going to replace the batteries at some point once I find out a bit more about how to do it.

So yes, I am a very happy chappy! I can see the potential for note-taking in University lectures with this as it allows you to type and draw diagrams - something that is not so easy with a PowerBook. Since I can type much faster than I can write it will make note-taking much less of a chore.
