What Causes the Floppy drive (Superdrive) Conk Out Anyway?

Hi. On floppy drives (superdrive) in Macs like the Color Classic, what causes it to not read and write? Dirt and grime causes that but is there something else? Do the heads deteriorate or loose their magnetism- how can this be restored to revive this kind of floppy drive? Thanks in advance.
