My only problem with that is, why bother with a b&w CRT when you could mount a small color LCD in there instead?

IIRC the problem used to be that 8.4" LCDs (i.e. ones that fill the whole opening of the screen) had too much of a bezel around the edge to fit inside a compact's case. That was a while ago that I remember hearing that, so I'd bet that that isn't the situation any more.
