if it picks up an ad-hoc network then it must be able to pick up any other wifi setup too.

i know you have been through it all, but it does suggest you have missed something.

its not set to pick up a particular wifi network is it? what about network keys, hex or ascii?

i cant see how a card could broken in only such a specific way - in that it can do computer to computer, but not access points.
