that statement doesn't really mean anything. for all you know, the guy could have 802.11a router and 802.11b receiver and wondering why the heck it doesn't work.
But anyway, to answer your question, yes, you can connect to any 802.11b or 802.11g (soon to come) open nodes with Airport. If you like, feel free to start war-chalking
