New AirPort cards (802.11g) coming?
i was just browsing amazon.com for an airport card and it says they're out of stock.
MacConnection is also out.
Does this mean new (802.11g) models are coming?
i think so.
right now the apple store estimates they won't ship airport cards until the 24th of August at the earliest.
here's why i think Apple could be unleashing 802.11g compatible airport cards to substitute the current 802.11b cards�
since upgrading a 802.11g capable base station from 802.11b to 802.11g is only a matter of firmware updates, Apple could be getting ready to release this update for the AirPort base station 2.0 by the end of the year, provided it has 802.11g capable hardware (which i think it does). Older (802.11b) airport cards would still be compatible.
note: August 24th may also be the date for the new PowerMacs to be uncovered or start shipping

I would lean towards to it too. 2-3 weeks for an airport card delivery seems awful long.
Nice if the base stations are upgradable... so I only have to spend $99 on the new card

The cards should be firmware upgradeable too, so it could be something to do with a component shortage.
The issue for those of us with the Graphite base stations is that it is unlikely that apple will provide an upgrade for those systems. What a PITA.

The same way apple did when they brought out the new firmware to support 128 bit WEP concurrently to the launch of Airport 2.
I don't know how the upgrade itself works, but I know the cards are flash upgradable.

i see� but the cards may not be 802.11g-upgradeable hardware.
however, i'm starting to suspect this is just a component shortage, otherwise these cards wouldn't be in 2-3 week delays, but just a few days so they would come out w/ the new power macs� unless apple has a powerbook update up their sleeves.

They should be. The radio side uses the same channel allocations, and frequencies. It depends how advanced the basic card is to begin.
