is there a limit on the length of a patch cable going from a router connected to adsl

just how long of a ethernet patch cable can i use, attached to a router attached to an adsl modem?

is there a preformance cost?

You can go a couple hundred feet (i believe 300 ft max on 10/100 before you need a repeater) So you should be fine, and no if you use a good quality cat 5 cable, you will not see noticeable performance loss.

Correct, 100 meters, or 327 feet is the maximum length of a single Cat-5 run.

FWIW, 3 feet is the minimum length.
