Airport & Ethernet config question

I've got three Macs, all running 10.2 (and boy its a great release!) and all Airport equipped. I've got a white ABS located upstairs where it provides pretty good coverage throughout the flat
In my living room I've got a G4 Cube and an iMac DV+ and they are linked with an Ethernet cable. in 'Network' I've created a configuration that enables both Airport and Ethernet, and they are listed in that order under 'Network Port Configurations'.
I never could get a good signal outside in my garden (just off the living room), and in fact there was only one corner where my TiBook could see the ABS.
I establish a 'Net connection on the Cube, and I've setup the iMac to share internet connection that it gets from Ethernet via Airport.
Everythings cool - I get absolutely solid coverage in the entire garden (hell, way out in the park thats just beyond my garden!) on my TiBook and I'm happy.
But unfortunately even though the iMac is getting connectivity via Ethernet, and distributing it to my TiBook via Airport, it (the iMac) can't seem to use the connection itself.
I've tried both ssh to a remote host, as well as IE and it just doesn't see it.
So I know its a configuration issue. Any ideas on what I should change, and where?
At first I thought it might be something in the Proxy panel of IE, but that doesn't explain the ssh problem.

Let me get this straight - you're using the iMac as a base station so that your TiBook can bounce off the iMac and get to the internet?
From your description, I believe you want the ethernet connection to be the first one listed in the iMac's Network preferences. This is the connection that the iBook uses first when initiating connections. In addition to that, since the AirPort card is only handling local traffic, make sure you do NOT have a default gateway/router defined on the iMac's AirPort configuration. Only the ethernet connection should have a default router set.
If that doesn't fix it, you need to provide more details, such as whether the iMac is running as a bridge or a NAT device - are the same subnets used on each side of the iMac? Are you using DHCP to serve addresses, or static addresses on the iMac and TiBook?
