I just moved and the layout of my new apartment is such that my desk is at the complete opposite side of the room where the phone jack is. Currently I'm running a 20' patch cord from the jack to my router, but this is just a short term solution... it's only a matter of time before I trip over it! I have a wireless router and an airport card in my ibook, and I think the best thing to do is to just move the router next to the phone jack and go wireless from there. But I'm a little concerned having my ibook AND the airport on all the time.

Has anyone else gone totally airport for their primary connection to the internet? If so what was your experience?

Also, for the more technically inclined people out there I have two quick questions:

#1 - is there any harm in having the airport card on 24/7 (i.e. burning out, loss of signal after a period of time, etc)

#2 - are there any other security precautions I should take? Currently, I use WEP, and run the firewall built into X, but I wonder if there's anything else I can do to make it harder to break into my little machine.
