windows xp and remote desktop with an airport
after 3 days of no sleep and many system resets i come to you all. i have a xp pro machine and a ibook. i have a wireless card in the ibook and am using my airport as a router. i use my pc for drafting architectural drawings. i commute 1 to 3 hours from my house daily. i needhelp and instructions to be able to use remote desktop for my xp pro machine with an airport. if the xp por machine is plugged straight into the cable modem no problem. if it is plugged into the airport it pulls a 10.0.1.3 ip address which is useless to remote access.
when i call apple they tell me that the $300 overpriced router i bought can do this if i pay them just $200 dollars more. then they tell me that they dont have any documentation on their knoledge base showing how to do this in detail (this is true!) i know it can be done because i know otr people who have lynksis routers doing this. if i have to break down and buy a lynksis router it will still be cheeper than apples $200. but how would i do this on either routers. i dont want to have to spend anymore money. i am a struggling to pay the bills as is.

Unless your cable company gives you multiple IP addresses (which is exceedingly unlikely), your base station MUST give all your machines 10.x.x.x addresses! (Or alternatively, 192.168.x.x, or 172.16.x.x, if you tell it to do so.)
What you need to do is find out what port(s) the Remote Desktop uses, and port-map those to the XP machine. Then, when you want to connect to it from outside, you use the base station's IP address (it's the only thing on your network with a real IP address), and it passes those ports to the XP machine.
Note that this process is absolutely identical with a Linksys (or any other) router, so you would gain nothing by getting another router (not that they cost anywhere approaching $200... $50 on sale is more like it).

thanks , i have already tried your advice but it did not work.
i bought a lynksis router saturday night at 4in the morning at amazon.com. it was the right thing to do. i waited to take it out of the box and it worked like butter. it is even faster than the airport. they had a cd that set everything up. i had to call in on how to set up my xp pro box for remote access. it literally took 20 minutes total. It cost me $80 but had i not been so impatient and paid for overnight. it would have been $59. that is with the free shipping amazon is offering right now.
my xp box has firewall software on it so i am very relieved. i have also tried to use this box as a server and it was impossible without that $200 fee from apple or an i.t. degree.
