When waking from sleep my iMac sometimes changes the IP address in the TCP/IP tab of my network settings for my Telewest broadband connection. The IP address changes and has self assigned in brackets underneath.
I have to go the connect via DHCP with manual address then back to connect via DHCP wait for a couple of seconds then the correct settings appear at which point everything continues to sail along nicely.
I've tried clicking the lock at the bottom of the network page but it doesn't appear to work. As i said it doesn't happen all the time which is what i find weird. Has anyone else had this, is it just me or is it a problem with Jaguar?
does the change in IP prevent you from accessing the Internet or email?

DHCP is meant to give you a changing IP address. perhaps when your Mac sleeps, its lease on that IP expires b/c it isn't in use, and when it wakes up, another one is assigned. If you want a static IP, then you'll need to request one from your broadband provider.
Yes the change of IP does stop me connecting.
Weird got up this morning woke up the mac from sleep and there was no change, how long does a lease on an IP last?

you aren't using a usb modem for your broadband, are you?
No it's an ethernet connection via a Motorola SB4200 SURFboard Cable Modem.
Should i use the lock to prevent changes at the bottom of the network settings in system prefs?

Does this mean that i can't turn the mac off?
I had locked the network settings page and turned the modem off so is turning the modem off the problem?
