While windows file sharing on the Mac isn't as smooth and easy as I hoped it would be, its useable.
Sicne you're not running Mac OS 10.2 or a samba sharing program such as DAVE, the PC will have to be the one sharing files while your Mac acts as a client and copies it onto the PC.
File sharing on Windows is relatively straightforward (even more straightforward than Apple's implementation in Jaguar). Simply right-click on a folder and choose Sharing. Make sure you're allowed to write files onto the folder (select Full access). You won't need to put a password unless you want to. If you don't see the Sharing option, you'll have to install the File and Printer sharing services (you may need the Windows installation CD). Go to Control Panel > Network. Click on File and Print Sharing. Check the options you want and click on Ok. click on once more. You may need to reboot.
On the Mac side, choose "Connect to Server" from the Go menu. Sometimes your Mac will list the available computers on the network. Sometimes it won't. What affects this usually is if both computers are on the same workgroup. On Windows, you can configure what workgroup you belong to in the Network control panel. On Macs, the default is "WORKGROUP." In any case, a sure fire way is to type in smb://ip.address/ and click on Ok. If all goes well, Mac OS X should show you a list of "shares" on the Windows side. Click on OK. You may have to type in a password if you specified one when sharing from Windows. If all goes well, you should be able to copy files onto Windows from your Mac.
To configure your Mac for sharing files with PCs, I strongly recommend you get the Samba Sharing Package from VersionTracker.com or MacUpdate.com. Its a preference pane/application combo that makes sharing files on the Mac a wee-bit easier. It doesn't provide an integrated a feel as Windows, but it can get the job done.
I frequently run into not seeing computers on the network if I specify a WINS server on the Mac. What helps smoothen things out is that I always specify them to be on the same workgroup.
