As for that "pricey" JetDirect card: if the printer has ethernet, then it already HAS the JetDirect card!
Mac OS 9 can readily print to an IP printer, all you have to do is use the Desktop Printer Utility instead of the Chooser.
You Open DPU, create a new LPR printer, enter the IP address ("Change..." under the "LPR Printer Selection; don't bother choosing the PPD yet), wait for it to be created on the desktop, and then, in the Finder, choose the new printer, go to Printing->Change Setup... and run the automatic setup.
It's more steps than using the Chooser, but it works, and it's often faster than AppleTalk printing.
