Airport base station ok in Japan and UK?
I'm living in Tokyo and am looking to buy an Airport base station. I want it to be useable when I return to the UK. My UK iBook works fine here with just a 3-pin to 2-pin adapter... Is it a case of simply using a similar adapter with the Airport when I get back home, or will I need a 'step-down' converter, or can I buy a UK Apple Airport power cable and plug that into the same base station?

Electrical power in Japan is 100VAC at either 50Hz or 60Hz, and uses plugs similar to those in the US, while in the UK it's 230VAC at 50Hz, with what can be called a Commonwealth-standard plug. In other words, electrical power is not at all the same.
The good news is that the only difference will be the power adapter. Ask at your Apple store (or contact them online) about purchasing both a Japan-US standard power adapter and a European-standard adapter.
Another issue is regulatory compliance in the different countries. Specifically, Japan allows all 14 possible 802.11b channels, while Europe only allows 1-13. This isn't a big issue, as you only lose one channel, but the UK will probably be watching that sort of thing. Check out Apple KnowledgeBase article 58550 for more information.
