Linksys BEFW11S4, does it work with Airport and if so how???

Now I just restarted the Mac and the Airport "saw" the router for about 5 minutes.

Then it seemingly vanished (I was about 10 feet from the router) and hasn't returned. I understand the PowerBook has bad reception but can it be *this* bad?

Could you post some screen shots of your settings? It would help us figure out what (if anything) is screwing it up. I have the same setup, and I can get about 30-40 feet of range out of it. Of course that is with big thick walls and stuff between the base station and my Ti.

Did you upgrade your firmware? I thought maybe that was my problem but if that is not it then maybe it is something else entirely. Its weird because the connection was there and then it was disconnecting and then reconnecting and finally I just lost the connection altogether.

I can't figure it out but I'll post the images when I get home and we'll see if that helps (what is the code to post the images now that MacNN has switched forum software?).

No, I didn't upgrade the firmware. Weird, I haven't heard of any upgraded firmware. Is that from Linksys?

Yes, if you go to their site there is upgraded firmware as of 9/5.

Man I hope I can get this thing working (I knew I should have just bougth this locally in case I had to return it ).

Easy solution, access http://192.168.1.1 from a browser, no username, admin as your password (change this), click the Advanced, then wireless, then under Authentication Type make it either Open or Shared Key, but not both. Open is a open network, shared key is with a password. save the settings, and you should be good to go.

Once you get everything working without password or authentication, let us know. It's important to lock down a wireless network as much as possible, within reasonable limits, to keep the baddies from hosing your computers (yes, there are Mac viruses now) or worse, turning your systems into file servers for their own purposes. It isn't _hard_ to protect your network, but it can be involved, so we can give you step-by-step instructions. And don't believe anyone that says you don't have to worry because you have a Mac-they're just harder to mess with, not bullet proof.

When you flashed the firmware, it overwrote all settings you'd made before. That means that your network name, any passwords, channels, etc., and whether your network was set for infrastructure or ad hoc. What it looks like is that all you need to do is restore those settings to match your computer's AirPort settings. Have you tried this yet? Open the Admin Utility on your computer and see what each setting is, then make the settings on configuration pages for the router match them.
