How to change screeshot format?

If you're running Jaguar, the PDF format is all it allows for screenshots.
The workaround is to take your PDF screenshot, open it in Preview, and choose Export from the File menu. Then you can create a copy in any of the standard formats - tiff, jpeg, etc.

Yes, I am using Jaguar, and I could have sworn at some point I had the option of what kind of format the screenshot would be...maybe it was a pre-Jag thing...oh well...

in 10.1 you could choose what format to take the screenshots on ...
it was a terminal command

defaults write NSGlobalDomain AppleScreenShotFormat JPEG (for instance)

Or you could use Snapz Pro X

I remember that tinkertools (I think that's what it's called) lets you change the default format... not sure if it still works in 10.2 hwoever.

Tinkertool doesn't do it anymore... but there is a great app I keep in my dock called Drop JPEG that instantly makes a jpeg copy of my screenshots. VERY handy. versiontracker.com

QuickImageCM is excellent. It's a compact little utility (a contextual menu) just a right click (or control-click) away. It allows you to convert a selected image to six different formats, get detailed file info, apply basic filters, resize, crop, rotate, and more.

i drag a pdf image to it, it converts to a jpeg,
deletes the original, and quits.

I hold the control key down while taking a screenshot so it goes to the clipboard instead of to a file. Go into Preview and hit cmd-N to open a new file with your screenshot and File->Export it to whatever format you want.

I just wish that I didn't have to quit DVD player to do a screenshot. Shouldn't hiding it be enough. I have movies playing when doing other stuff and quitting it every time I want to capture something is a little much.
