10.2.4 and Strange Apple Menu Items Phenomena

10.2.4 and Strange Apple Menu Items Phenomena Software 2 posts Feb 15, 2003 — Feb 15, 2003
Just to set the stage, before my update I was using 10.2.3 and CarbonG4s Watercolor theme. After my update from 10.2.4, I noticed that my clock menu item had reverted to its original black state. So I attempted to re-apply the theme to see if that would change the clock back to the white variant. This left me with no clock, and I later realized that none of the Apple menu items were working either. I attempted to re-launch them from within core services with no luck. At this point, I decided to try a third party menu item, so I started Net Monitor and it worked normally. Getting annoyed I reapplied the 10.2.4 update and my black clock is back and Apple menu items work normally. I now have watercolor working fine except for the black Apple menu items. This has left me wondering what 10.2.4 has changed to cause this and how to get my white clock back?
I was having similar problems and I think I tracked it down to problems with the SystemUIServer. It looks like some themes change something in this server and for whatever reason 10.2.4 doesn't like it. The server was probably updated somehow and when a theme replaces that with the older version, it breaks things. I have vowed off themes for the time being, after having reinstalled the system twice. I'm just glad it's so easy to do with OSX
